Like I’ve said before, it’s not good news that the Cubs so frequently have a large volume of injury update info to share, but it’s (1) good that we’re getting the updates, and (2) the news is mostly good today.
Also relevant this time of year: decisions about trades are informed by the progress of injured players (and/or the messaging you’re able to get out there to your trade partners … ). The Cubs very much need to make a variety of trades regardless, but, to the extent they feel injured players can give them a buffer to not feel SO desperate, that’s ideal.
Craig Counsell provided the updates, via Marquee …
RHP Edward Cabrera
Cabrera has successfully thrown bullpens and is ready for his first rehab outing tomorrow with Iowa. The expectation is that he’ll have three of them, if they go well, so I wouldn’t expect more than 3-ish innings and 45-ish pitches for Cabrera tomorrow. If all goes to plan, he’d be back with the big league team in mid-August.
RHP Daniel Palencia
Things are good with Palencia (flexor strain), who could come to Chicago this weekend to throw some live batting practice. That could be a final checkpoint before heading out on a rehab assignment (that’s from me, not Counsell; but this is often the schedule of events). A mid-August return is still looking very plausible for Palencia, too.
LHP Hoby Milner
A good rehab outing at Iowa for Hoby Milner, who will have at least one more, according to Counsell. He’s not a dominant reliever, but he’s such a steady veteran that you’d really like to have him back.
He certainly looks recovered from the appendicitis:

We saw the pictures from Rich Biesterfeld earlier this week that had Ben Brown throwing the baseball out in Arizona, which was a great sign. That said, Counsell cautioned that Brown is still in something of a “pre-Spring Training” mode, and far away from throwing off the mound. He has to keep throwing and stay asymptomatic in the neck before he can move on to the next phases, and, to me, it’s pretty clear the Cubs are taking it EXTRA slow, knowing that any setback probably ends his season.
Remember, the Cubs and Brown have been through this before, and it kept not quite getting right enough for him to keep progressing. So they have good reason to go slowly, and to target a late-in-the-season return (almost certainly in relief), rather than risk no return at all.
LHP Justin Steele
Steele will be with the team in Chicago this weekend and throwing off the mound. Touch-and-feel sessions, Counsell called it, which means they aren’t quite yet high-intent sessions. Still, it’s another great step in the process, and does give him the runway to return sometime in September in relief. In other words, things are still on target for a unique kind of impact this year.
UTL Matt Shaw
The good news is that Shaw is swinging the bat, but he’s not yet facing live pitching. So it would seem he is still a ways away from a rehab assignment, which would obviously precede a return. Until he’s facing live pitching and feels good after, we can’t even predict the timing for a rehab assignment, much less a return to the big league team. I remain of the mind that, unless it’s a rebuilding club, I don’t see Shaw being traded right now because of the uncertain nature of the injury.
RHP Ethan Roberts
Nothing from Counsell on Roberts, but I thought it was worth mentioning that he’s now had several rehab appearances at Iowa, so the Cubs will soon have to make a decision on whether to bring him back, or option him to Iowa (where he already is).
