Claire Foy and Matthew Macfadyen have been cast in You Are Here, a new tear-jerking love story on the BBC.
The upcoming eight-part series, based on the 2024 novel You Are Here by One Day writer David Nicholls, will follow the story of Michael and Marnie, two divorceés who join friends on a coast-to-coast hike across the UK.
Walking from the Lake District to Robin Hood's Bay in North Yorkshire, the pair soon find themselves getting closer as they begin to enjoy a new side of life on their epic mission to complete the walk.
Making their way across the tricky coastline, complete with unpredictable weather and unexpected changes to their plans, Michael and Marnie find romance when they're least looking for it – although it might be just what each of them needs.
Succession star Macfadyen and The Crown star Foy are the first major cast members to be announced, with filming set to commence across the Lake District and in Manchester soon.
The pair previously worked together on 2008's Little Dorrit, another BBC adaptation mini-series.
A release date for You Are Here is yet to be announced, with filming yet to commence.
Normal People director Lenny Abrahamson has joined the project, while author Nicholls is adapting his story for the screen – continuing a trend set by previous adaptations of his works, with Nicholls writing the screenplays for 2006 film Starter for 10, the 2011 film adaptation of One Day and several episodes of the One Day Netflix series in 2024.
After the announcement, David Nicholls posted an update on Instagram saying: "If I’ve been a little quiet here, this is the reason. I’m so pleased to be able to announce the TV adaptation of my latest novel, #YouAreHere, which we start filming very soon.
"I’ve been a huge admirer of director Lenny Abrahamson’s work for a long time, and I couldn’t be happier to be working with Claire Foy and Matthew Macfadyen as Marnie and Michael.
"Despite all the dialogue (because of all the dialogue) it has been a tough book to adapt – so much is unexpressed, and that’s in part the theme of the book, the difficulty of saying what one really feels. But that’s also the pleasure of adaptation and the thrill of working with amazing actors."
"The rest of the cast are great – more on that soon – and it’s a pleasure, too, to be working with the team at Element Pictures, BBC and Starz, and to be filming in those beautiful locations with a fantastic production team," he added.
"Everyone is investing in waterproofs. I'll keep you posted here, but for now, I couldn't be more excited."
"As a huge admirer of David’s writing, I’m delighted to be collaborating with him to bring You Are Here to the screen," added Abrahamson.
