MS Dhoni is likely to retire as a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) player ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL 2027) season, as he is expected to join the team's coaching setup, as per a report from journalist Rohit Juglan.
Dhoni, who is now 45, could be seen as CSK's mentor in the upcoming season. Ahead of the IPL 2027 season, multiple star cricketers are under the radar, and Chennai Super Kings are one of the teams looking to revamp their squad.
Dhoni concluded the previous IPL season without playing a single match. He was with the team; he participated in the team's training sessions, but did not come out to play a match for the team. Injuries were among the major reasons the keeper-batter did not feature as a CSK cricketer in the IPL 2026 campaign.
MS Dhoni's knee injury is considered one of the major setbacks for the former skipper. According to previously published reports, during the IPL 2026 season, Dhoni had been working on his speed for running between the wickets, but it was not enough to meet the fitness standards of the franchise league.
MS Dhoni's fitness remains a concern for the Chennai Super Kings
On behalf of the team, Michael Hussey, former head coach Stephen Fleming, and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad repeatedly said that whether Dhoni would play or not completely depended on his own decision. Rohit Juglan, a RevSportz journalist, in a YouTube video, recently mentioned that chances to see Mahendra Singh Dhoni as a player in the IPL 2027 are very thin.
Despite the knee issue, for which he needed surgery, his fitness remains a concern. Thus, the keeper-batter is likely not to continue as a cricketer anymore for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2027. As the team is required to find a new head coach, MS Dhoni is believed to be one of the main contenders to take over the role. Rohit Juglan, however, strongly believes that Dhoni as a CSK coach is unlikely to happen. He could be the mentor of the Chennai Super Kings, but not the successor of Stephen Fleming.
"Everything depends on his body, how his body reacts... So, the thing is, Mahendra Singh Dhoni did not say that he will not come back as a player, but all the people I have spoken to so far, and there are 1-2 people who have been very close to Mahendra Singh Dhoni at one time, they say that Mahendra Singh Dhoni can be seen as a coach cum mentor or mentor cum coach," Rohit Juglan claims in his video.
"Although it would be easy to say that he will not come in the role of a coach, most likely he will come as a mentor," he further mentions.
