After more than a month away from social media, Nathan returned to Instagram to explain why he had remained silent for the past year before finally weighing in on the incident that led to Brumer's exit.
The controversy began when Luke and stew Genevieve Lillie sparked backlash for using Nathan's bed for a late-night hookup while he was away visiting his girlfriend and baby. The next morning, Luke attempted—but failed—to secretly wash Nathan's sheets before anyone noticed. Because he never managed to get them into the laundry, Nathan unknowingly lounged in and slept on the soiled bedding for days.
When Luke eventually confessed, Nathan was so disgusted he struggled to speak to his deckhand and ultimately informed Captain Sandy Yawn about what had happened. Realizing Nathan was unable to move past the betrayal, Luke ultimately chose to leave the yacht.
While Gallagher made it clear that what happened "wasn't okay" and that it deserved consequences, he also praised Brumer's work ethic, said he would gladly work with him again off the show, and urged fans to stop the "bullying and hateful DMs," reminding followers that "none of us are defined by our worst mistake."
"I also got to know Luke as a deckhand," Nathan wrote. "I respected his work ethic, the respect he showed me, and his willingness to learn every single day. I trusted him on deck, and that doesn't disappear because of one bad decision. One of the things I looked forward to this season was going through the season with this guy. On and off camera we had some really good life chats. As a bosun on the show I don't get to choose my deckhands, but if I were to decide who, I'd had Luke on the show and I'd have him again on another boat away from the show."
Nathan also explained why he reported the incident to Captain Sandy, saying he wanted her to know she could trust him to always be transparent about what was happening with his team. "If someone was to get ill, I would've been disappointed in myself for not telling hierarchy," he wrote.
