The singer-songwriter earned the Philanthropist of the Year Award on July 22 at The Hollywood Reporter's 2026 Social Impact Summit in Los Angeles.
He was honored for creating the Heart and Armor Foundation for Veterans Health. Mayer spoke to Peopleat the event about what motivated him to start the nonprofit.
“I visited Camp Lejeune with a friend of mine who was there on official business,” he said. “And so I met wounded veterans without knowing I would. And they met me without knowing they would. There were no cameras. There was no celebrity run of show. And we just talked to each other.”
“It caught me off guard,” the 48-year-old musician added. “I wasn’t prepared, and their stories really changed my life. I knew that that was gonna be my thing for the rest of my life.”
Heart and Armor intends to develop research for veterans. They provide medical, social, educational, and cultural resources. The organization has a portfolio of over $13 million in scientific research and has produced 25 scientific publications, according to their website.
During his acceptance speech, Mayer shared the first time he was “viscerally, sensorily” introduced to post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury; he became “blown away by the subtlety of it.”
The Grammy Award winner shared that he was grateful for the award, but he was glad that Heart and Armor was getting recognition.
“I know they work every single day tirelessly, so for them to have the morale boost of being recognized is really great,” Mayer said. “That’s really what it’s about. And it just creates more awareness. And I think when it comes to a charitable foundation, the more awareness, the better.”
He continued, “In so many other aspects of my life, I like to control exposure of things to keep things cool. And here it’s like, I wanna shout it from the rooftop. So anytime I have the opportunity to show up with the team and give them some love and also tell the world more about the great work they’re doing, I’m taking it.”
