Mercedes has officially confirmed the departure of long-serving junior driver chief Gwen Lagrue, bringing an end to an 11-year spell that helped shape some of Formula 1's brightest talents before Red Bull swiftly announced the Frenchman's arrival as the new head of its prestigious Junior Programme.
Lagrue leaves Brackley after playing a pivotal role in rebuilding Mercedes' young driver academy into one of the strongest talent pipelines in motorsport, overseeing the development of future Grand Prix winners George Russell and Esteban Ocon, while also identifying Kimi Antonelli as a karting prodigy long before the Italian reached Formula 1.

Mercedes acknowledged Lagrue's contribution with an emotional farewell message, highlighting the lasting impact he has made on the team's driver development programme.
"Thank you Gwen. It’s been a great ride together," Mercedes wrote in its farewell message. "Together, we’ve developed many young drivers, including our current F1 drivers George [Russell] and Kimi [Antonelli], and you’ve made a fantastic contribution.
"We have built a true successor to the original Mercedes-Benz junior team, and you leave in place a talented group to carry on this work. Professional relationships may come to an end, but we will always remain friends, with a shared mindset. We wish you well for your next challenge."
Among Lagrue's most celebrated discoveries was Antonelli, whom he first spotted racing karts at just 11 years old before guiding the Italian through the junior categories and into Formula 1. Antonelli has since established himself as one of the sport's leading young stars in only his second season.
Red Bull hands Lagrue the reins
Red Bull wasted little time confirming Lagrue's appointment as director of the Red Bull Junior Programme, where he will report directly to team principal and CEO Laurent Mekies.
Mekies believes the Frenchman is ideally placed to build on the academy's remarkable legacy while ensuring Red Bull continues to produce the next generation of Formula 1 stars.
"Gwen is one of the very best talent developers in F1 and I know first-hand the expertise, leadership and passion he brings to developing young drivers," said Mekies.
"The Red Bull Junior Programme has always been a cornerstone of Red Bull's success, and having Gwen lead it soon reflects the importance we continue to place on developing the next generation of F1 talent.

The Junior Programme has become the benchmark in F1 because of his vision, commitment and ability to identify and develop exceptional talents and he deserves enormous credit for that."
Lagrue also reflected on his decision to leave Mercedes, describing the opportunity to lead Red Bull's academy as the perfect next step in his career.
"Joining Oracle Red Bull Racing marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for me. After eleven memorable years at Mercedes, I felt this was the right moment to take on a new challenge and continue growing personally and professionally.
