Black Panther 3 confirmed as Industry and Alien: Romulus star David Jonsson lands lead role alongside returning cast

Ryan Coogler has confirmed a third Black Panther film, with the director returning to helm the sequel alongside the exciting news that a new actor will be stepping into the iconic suit.

During Marvel Studios' panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was revealed that David Jonsson (Alien: Romulus, Industry) will take on the mantle of Black Panther in the upcoming film.

Black Panther 3 will be released in cinemas on 15 December 2028, so there's plenty of time to get excited about returning to Wakanda.

Introducing Jonsson, Coogler shared: "The last time we got to make a movie, we introduced a character who is the son of the character that the great Chadwick Boseman played, our T'Challa, in that film.

"And today, I want to tell you that in this next film, he grows up [and] he comes of age."

Jonsson received a standing ovation as he walked onto the stage, and said: "I want to say thank you so much. Thank you Ryan, thank you Kevin [Feige], thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and the privilege and the blessing to join.

"I actually don't want to say too much because I want to let the screen do the talking. But believe me, the honour is entirely mine."

Jonsson's character, Prince T'Challa II, was first introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He is the son of T'Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o).

Jonsson will be joined by returning cast members Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, and Winston Duke, who reprises his role as M'Baku.

Wright took over as Black Panther following the death of Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with Shuri stepping into her brother's shoes.

Boseman portrayed T'Challa in the first Black Panther film, but sadly died from colon cancer in 2020 at the age of 43, while Coogler was working on the script for the sequel.

Wright previously told Variety in 2023 that she believed a third film was "already in the works".

She told the publication: "You know, we just had a terrific two years of bringing it out and everybody coming together to support it. We need a little bit of a break, we need to regroup and Ryan needs to get back into the lab, so it’s going to take a little while, but we’re really excited for you guys to see that."

Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever are available to stream on Disney Plus. You can sign up to Disney Plus from £4.99 a month now.
