I guess the Cubs can win extra-inning games without it being a walk-off? Weird. But good!
Tonight’s was the pitcher’s duel we thought it might be (and here’s hoping the rest of the Cubs’ starters this weekend can do it, too … ), with Matthew Boyd more or less matching Jared Jones. It’s good that Boyd is back, healthy, and really looking like his best self.
It’s also good that the Cubs’ bullpen had a strong night in a tight game.
It’s not so good that the Cubs’ bats couldn’t get anything going before the 10th inning except for Pete Crow-Armstrong’s solo homer, but all’s well that ends well. Dansby Swanson came up with the huge two-out hit to score Ian Happ (nice slide, he was totally safe), and then the Pirates shot themselves in the foot – intentionally walking PCA to load the bases … only to unintentionally walk Seiya Suzuki an force in a run. That’s what you get, cowards.
It wound up being the difference, too, since the Pirates did score their free runner in the bottom of the frame.
The Ankin Law “Making it Personal” Player of the Game feels like a four-headed monster tonight, with (1) PCA hitting the game-tying homer, (2) Matthew Boyd pitching a gem, (3) Dansby Swanson with the clutch knock, and (4) Ian Happ with the great slide AND gunning down a runner at the plate that would’ve made extra innings not a thing.
