The Social Security Administration announced “major enhancements” to its some of its digital tools and users’ online accounts, with more options filing and navigating disability claims and the appeals process.
The new tools, the announcement said, are “meant to provide individuals with greater visibility, faster access to information, and more efficient case processing throughout the lifecycle of a disability claim.”
According to the announcement, Claim Status Trackers will now be available online, which will provide “real-time updates, processing time estimates” and more.
The system will also expand digital notices and online document submission, the announcement said.
“These digital tools will streamline operations and empower claimants to stay informed and promptly respond to important developments throughout the hearing process, eliminating the need for hearing offices to make outbound calls and instead, focus on reviewing cases in a timely manner,” SSA Chief of Disability Adjudication Jay Ortis said in a release.
A number of disability forms can now be filed online, the SSA said, including:
Form HA-4631, Recent Medical Treatment; Form HA-4632, Medication Information; and Form HA-4633, Work Background.Notices will also be sent online to a user’s account message center, but paper notices will also be mailed.
“Paper notices will continue to be mailed to claimants and their appointed representatives. This enhancement supports faster case processing and timely communications,” the release said.
According to the release, the changes impact more than 100 million Americans with online Social Service accounts.
The changes come as checks for social security checks for July continue to go out, with some changes for the month of August.
Those who receive Supplemental Security Income checks can expect two checks in July instead of one, but that will mean no checks in the month of August. This is because Aug. 1, the day the check would usually be scheduled, falls on a Saturday.
Rules state that if the first of the month falls on a holiday or weekend, the Supplemental Security Income checks are delivered the previous weekday.
Therefore, SSI recipients will get their August check on July 31. This also means they will not receive a check in the actual month of August.
The next check will come in September 1 for that month.
For Social Security recipients who do not receive SSI, the payment date depends on your date of birth:
If you were born between the 1st and 10th of the month, you will receive your payment on the second Wednesday of the month. If you were born between the 11th and 20th of the month, you will get your payment on the third Wednesday of the month. If you were born between the 21st and 31st, you will receive your money on the fourth Wednesday of the month.The calendar quirk comes amid a number of changes for recipients this year.
Among the key adjustments are increases in monthly payments as well as Medicare Part B premiums, and higher income limits for those working while receiving benefits.
