Can I Interest You in Some Positive Cubs Pitcher Injury Updates?

Is it good or bad when there are relatively few injury updates to offer, especially compared to the last monster update? On the one hand, less is more when it comes to injuries. On the other hand, there are few updates here NOT because there are few injuries, so … can that be good?

It’s all positive at least. Progress. I’ll take that.

Edward Cabrera, RHP – Live BP Coming

Edward Cabrera is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session this weekend, which figures to be a big test of the hamstring. The fact that he’s been up on the mound for a bit is already a good sign, but once he is pitching with some real intent, as he will in live BP, then we’ll have a much better sense for his return trajectory.

Ideally, he’ll throw the live BP, come out of it feeling good, and then be ready for a minor league rehab assignment. The length of his absence is such that he’s going to need at least two rehab starts, and potentially as many as three. That puts his return to the big leagues in the mid-August range, which is what the Cubs have been estimating publicly for a little while now.

Cabrera initially injured the hammy (and adductor) on a stretch at first base, and the way he crumbled and had to be carted off left us worried that his season might be over. So if he misses six weeks and comes back with a fresh arm? The rosiest among you might call that a win.

Hoby Milner, LHP – Also Live BP Coming

As with Cabrera, Hoby Milner is scheduled to throw live batting practice this weekend as he returns from his appendicitis.

Milner went out that same June week as Cabrera, but organ surgery is obviously a different than a muscular strain, and a little harder to guess a timeline in advance. He’s also rehabbing as a reliever, which requires less stretching out than a starter, and fewer days between rehab appearances.

That is all to say, it doesn’t shock me that Milner himself apparently believes early-August is possible, and that would make me quite pleased:

Hopefully the live BP goes well this weekend, and the Cubs proceed with a rehab assignment from there.

Ben Brown, RHP – Positive Signs Thus Far

The big question on Ben Brown has been whether the stress reaction in his neck would prohibit him from starting again this year, because Craig Counsell has been confident that Brown would return in at least SOME role.

For now, Brown is working with plyo balls before moving on to baseball throwing, and the Cubs want to see that he’s asymptomatic for a period of days before moving on. Sounds like that might be close:

Cubs pitching injury updates:-Ben Brown has been playing catch (with plyo balls and baseballs)."We’re still at the stage where we want to have good days – no symptoms," Counsell said. "… We’re getting close to getting out of that phase, but that’s the phase we're still in."

The Cubs obviously want Ben Brown back as soon as possible, but they probably know from last time this happened in 2024 that if he’s not totally clear of the symptoms, ramping up pitching activity risks just bringing it all right back and sending them to square one. If that were to happen this time around, it could mean the end of Brown’s season. So I’m glad to see the caution.

Once Brown starts throwing the baseball, the timeline probably comes mostly down to how he feels. If he does checkpoint number one and stays asymptomatic the next day, cool, keep it moving. In that sense, there probably is “time” for Ben Brown to stretch back out as a starting pitcher before the end of the season (and I’d understand the temptation, because you want him at the front of a postseason rotation). I don’t know if the Cubs will ultimately go that route, though, knowing their margin for error is so small, and knowing that Brown out of the bullpen could still provide a ton of value (and would not necessarily limit him from returning to the rotation next year).

And, hey, he looks happy if nothing else:
