After investigating further, I found that the original test folder had been reduced from roughly 440 KB to just 12 KB. Finder showed the folder as empty, and a manual inspection in Terminal confirmed that all of the user files had been removed. The only remaining items were two macOS-generated .DS_Store files and an empty directory named N, which appears to be part of VaultSort’s internal deletion process.
Based on those findings, it appears the secure deletion itself completed successfully, but the application encountered a problem during its final cleanup or verification stage and incorrectly reported the operation as a failure. I shared my findings, along with the error message and Terminal output, with the developer to help reproduce the issue.

The only issue I encountered during this phase of testing involved the post-processing stage of Fortify Delete, which did not appear to affect the successful removal of the actual test files.
External SSD Testing
For my external storage testing, I used a Western Digital My Passport SSD Portable (1TB, WDBAGF0010BGD-WESN) connected directly to my MacBook Pro. I expected performance to fall somewhere between the internal SSD and my network-attached storage, and that’s exactly what I observed.
The Organize feature behaved identically to the internal SSD test, quickly separating the mixed test files into folders based on their file types without any issues. Likewise, Duplicate Detection produced the same results as the internal SSD, identifying the expected duplicate files and presenting them for review before removal.

NAS Testing
My final round of testing used a Synology DS1821+ connected to my network via Gigabit Ethernet, while my MacBook Pro accessed the NAS over Wi-Fi using an SMB network share. As expected, working across the network introduced additional latency, but I also encountered a few behaviors that differed from the local storage tests.
The first issue appeared during the Organize test. Although VaultSort completed the operation, none of the files were moved into category folders. Instead, every file remained in the original root directory. This behavior differed significantly from both the internal SSD and external SSD tests, where the files were successfully organized into separate folders.
The Smart Categorize feature produced the same categorization results as the local storage tests, successfully matching approximately 600 files while reporting unsupported file types for the remainder. However, performance was substantially slower. The initial scan took approximately 22.7 seconds, compared to just over 2 seconds on the internal SSD, and the overall categorization process increased from about 26 seconds locally to more than 4½ minutes across the network. While the feature remained functional, network latency clearly had a significant impact on processing time.
I also reran Duplicate Detection against the same dataset used during my previous tests. This time, however, VaultSort scanned only 4,235 files instead of the expected 9,500+, identifying 2,682 duplicate files rather than the 5,995 duplicates found during local testing. Because the source dataset was identical, I wasn’t able to determine why only a portion of the files were scanned.
