Only three games in the Cubs‘ minor league system on Wednesday, as Myrtle Beach was rained out of their matchup. In Iowa’s matchup, the offense rallied after a slow start, but unfortunately couldn’t pull off the win. Knoxville had a late rally of their own that came up just short. And South Bend picked up a win thanks to a big day at the plate from Jose Escobar. Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs got off to a slow start against the Gwinnett Stripers (Braves), and it ended up costing them. Jace Beck was on the mound to start, and things didn’t go terribly well for him. Beck allowed a pair of runs in the first, two more in the second, and one more in the third. Beck was pulled after three innings with Gwinnett holding a 5-0 lead.
After scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Cubs finally got on the board in the sixth and put a big dent into the 5-0 deficit. With two outs and the bases loaded, Owen Ayers brought home Iowa’s first run with an RBI single. Chas McCormick was the next batter, and he drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-2. After that, James Triantos reached on an error that scored BJ Murray. Ben Cowles then drew another bases-loaded walk, and just like that, it was 5-4 after the top of the sixth.
The Cubs weren’t done there, though. With a runner on third and one out in the seventh, BJ Murray tied the ballgame up with a sacrifice fly, erasing the 5-0 deficit. That 5-5 tie didn’t last all that long, though. In the bottom of the seventh, Andrew Wantz gave up a two-out single with runners on second and third, giving Gwinnett the lead right back at 7-5, which held up as the final score.

Like Iowa, Knoxville needed a rally to get themselves back into their matchup with the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), but theirs came up just short in the ninth. The game was scoreless through the first four innings, and Knoxville struck first with an Alex Ramírez RBI single.
But the 1-0 lead barely lasted, and in the bottom of the fourth the wheels fell off a bit. Dawson Netz was tagged for three runs and didn’t make it out of the frame. The Trash Pandas added two more runs in the fifth off Luke Little, and another in the sixth off Tyler Schlaffer.
The score stayed at 6-1 until the ninth when the Smokies got a rally started. With the bases loaded and no one out, Karson Simas drew a walk. Then Alex Ramírez reached on an error, scoring another and making it 6-3. A pair of sacrifice flies from Jefferson Rojas and Andy Garriola cut the deficit to 6-5. With two outs and Edgar Alvarez up, Ramírez stole second to move the tying run into scoring position, but unfortunately, Alvarez struck out, and the rally came up a run short.

The South Bend Cubs picked up the lone win of the day in the Cubs system, 6-3 over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers). Wisconsin jumped out to the first lead of the ballgame in the top of the third, picking up a pair of runs off Nazier Mulé on an RBI double and an RBI single, but the Cubs had a quick answer. In the bottom of the third, Kade Snell singled in a run, then Michael Hallquist evened the score at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly. The next inning, South Bend added two more on a Jose Escobar two-run single.
After a scoreless fifth, the Timber Rattlers got to within one in the top of the sixth when Brayden Spears gave up an RBI double, cutting the lead to 4-3. That’s how the score stayed until the eighth, when the Cubs added some insurance. Who else but the red-hot Jose Escobar brought home a run on a double to right, making it a 4-4 day for him. Then, Angel Cepeda brought in one more with an RBI single, making it a 6-3 Cubs lead, which held up as the final score.
