San Diego’s signature annual pop culture convention has committed to remain in the city through 2030, Mayor Todd Gloria announced on the opening day of this year’s event.
“Comic-Con belongs in San Diego, and today’s announcement ensures this incredible tradition will continue here through 2030,” said Gloria. “This agreement is the result of years of partnership and reflects our shared commitment to the fans, creators, businesses and workers who make Comic-Con unlike anything else in the world.”
Gloria spoke Wednesday morning alongside officials from Comic-Con International, the San Diego Convention Center and the San Diego Tourism Authority.
This year’s event is expected to attract 135,000 attendees during its four-day run and generate $160 million in regional economic impact through direct and indirect visitor spending.
The “Con” as it is known has evolved from a small gathering of comic book enthusiasts in 1970 to a global cultural phenomenon for writers, artists, creators, actors, producers and entertainment companies.
It is the largest convention of its kind in the world, featuring 460,000 square feet of exhibit pace, more than 1,000 exhibitors, and over 2,000 hours of events celebrating comics, film, television, gaming, publishing and the arts.
“We are both excited and thrilled to remain in San Diego through 2030,” said David Glanzer, chief communications and strategy officer of Comic-Con. “We are grateful to the city, Tourism Authority and the many hotels who have joined in offering increased room blocks at competitive rates that can keep tens of thousands of fans returning to Comic-Con in San Diego for years to come.”
Gloria said Comic-Con has come to play a play a pivotal role in shaping the city’s identity while also generating over $3 million in tax revenue.
“Comic-Con is San Diego’s annual blockbuster — filled with action, imagination and a massive supporting cast,” he said. “I love the costumes, the creativity and the cultural energy it brings — along with the tax dollars that come in when visitors enjoy themselves in our city.”
