Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding addressed his relationship with his former boss during his first appearance at SEC Media Days on Wednesday afternoon.
Golding was asked about Lane Kiffin, who deserted Ole Miss for LSU ahead of last year’s College Football Playoff, clearing the way for Golding to take the head job in Oxford.
Golding said he and Kiffin are “good” despite the latter’s dramatic exit. Though, he did add that he thought Kiffin was “dumb to leave” Oxford.
“Lane and I are good. Everybody won from it,” Golding said. “Every place isn’t for everybody. That’s OK. Throughout the process, I told him thought he was dumb to leave. I have no ill-will towards him. Wish him the best of luck.”

Golding acquitted himself well after Kiffin’s departure, leading the Rebels to a pair of College Football Playoff victories before bowing out in the semifinals. Ole Miss returns quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and a host of other key players this fall, so it will be hoping to get back to the CFP in Golding’s first full year in charge.
Ole Miss opens the 2026 season against Louisville on Sept. 6. The Rebels will host LSU two weeks later on Sept. 19.
