Trials on the case began four years ago. Italian news organisation ANSA reports that Giovanni Castellucci, the former chief executive of Atlantia, a former parent company of motorway operator Autostrade per l’Italia, was given a 12-year prison sentence.
He was already serving a six year term in relation to a 2013 bus crash which killed 40 people close to the town of Monteforte Irpino.
Former Autostrade per l’Italia employee Michele Donferri received an 11-year prison sentence, while former employee Paolo Berti was handed five years and six months.
Autostrade per l’Italia was originally a state-owned company which then transitioned to private ownership before reverting back to state ownership following the Morandi Bridge collapse.
Antonino Galatà, the former chief executive from maintenance company Spea was handed a five and a half year sentence, while Mauro Coletta, the previous director of the transport ministry’s highway concessions manager, was given five years in prison.
25 defendants were acquitted owing to a statute of limitations.
All defendants had previously denied wrongdoing.
The BBC reports that warning signs that a possible collapse was imminent had been ignored, as had bridge maintenance. Defence lawyers claimed the collapse was instead caused by a cable encased in concrete.
A replacement 1,067-metre-long bridge designed by Renzo Piano was completed by a team of Webuild and Fincantieri in August 2020, 15 months after starting construction.
