Going to a concert usually comes with one universal rule: the closer you sit to the stage, the more you'll pay. But one legendary musician has spent the last 25 years doing things differently, refusing to sell the most coveted seats in the house. And that icon is Billy Joel.
Joel, who recently announced a new clothing collaboration with the MLB, previously revealed that he doesn't offer front row seats to any of his shows. The reason? He doesn't want his fans buying pricey tickets from scalpers.
"About 25 years ago, I got tired of looking down...the first-row tickets are always scalper tickets—always somebody who paid way too much money to be a big shot—sit in the front row," Joel said on a 2017 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live. He went on to say that he knows that the "real fans are in the back" of the arena. So, he has his team upgrade some of his biggest fans, many of whom are just happy to be in the building, never mind in a seat that's close enough to see the sweat on Joel's forehead.
Joel reportedly loses about $20,000 per show by doing this, according to Morning Drive with Christie Live,
In 2025, Joel was forced to cancel all of his shows after he was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder called normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).
"This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance," a statement released at the time read. "Under his doctor's instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period."
It's been more than a year since Joel has performed a full length concert and, while his health seems to be improving, he hasn't announced any plans to return to the stage. If an when he does, however, expect the first row to be filled not with the highest bidders, but with the fans who have supported him throughout his legendary career.
