Remembering Nico 38 Years After the Death of the Velvet Underground Singer

In July 1988, model and singer Nico passed away aged 49 after falling from her bicycle in Spain.

Nico had been a model for Coco Chanel in the 1950s and acted for Fellini, but she is probably best known for her work with The Velvet Underground.

Born in Cologne as Christa Päffgen, Nico worked as an actress and model, appearing in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita and Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls. Warhol insisted she join The Velvet Underground, despite Lou Reed's scepticism.

Despite his chagrin, Nico lent her haunting vocals to three songs on the band's 1967 debut, The Velvet Underground & Nico: "Femme Fatale," "All Tomorrow's Parties" and "I'll Be Your Mirror."

After releasing their debut album, Nico left The Velvet Underground to pursue a solo career. She would make several critically acclaimed, avant-garde solo albums before passing away.

Nico struggled with heroin addiction for 15 years. She became involved in exercising as a way to combat cravings after she quit her habit, using this as a way of combating cravings. It's sadly this new love that would lead to her untimely death.

"In the late morning of July 17, 1988, my mother told me she needed to go downtown to buy marijuana," Nico's son, Christian Aaron Boulogne, said in Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk. "She sat down in front of the mirror and wrapped a black scarf around her head. My mother stared at the mirror and took great care to wrap the scarf appropriately. Down the hill on her bike: 'I'll be back soon.' She left in the early afternoon on the hottest day of the year."

The former It Girl fell from her bicycle and hit her head. She was found unconscious by a taxi driver and was taken to a hospital where she passed away from a severe cerebral hemorrhage.

"Her manager, Alan Wise, said she died in a hospital on the island a few hours after the accident," The New York Times reported at the time. "A coroner's report said she had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage."

Nicol is remembered by generations of artists, models and filmmakers, who cite her as their inspiration. Her solo albums paved the way for influential musicians like Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Cure, Björk, and Elliott Smith
