A suburban police officer has been arrested and charged with official misconduct after he allegedly shared confidential information with a criminal suspect.
According to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, 32-year-old Bellwood police officer Michael Davis has been arrested and charged with one felony count of official misconduct after he allegedly shared information with a criminal suspect he was acquainted with.
Prosecutors allege Davis took images of information found in the state’s Law Enforcement Agencies Data System, a database that includes details about ongoing law enforcement investigations, and sent them to an acquaintance.
That suspect was under investigation for allegedly leading a police officer on a high-speed chase and fired shots at the officer’s vehicle.
Davis also allegedly told the acquaintance to “put that car in a garage or something, and I would strongly advise to sell it so that you can get rid of those plates” in text messages, prosecutors say.
Davis has been an officer in Bellwood since January 2025, according to authorities.
“No one is above the law, and my office will continue to hold police officers to the highest ethical and professional standards,” said Cook County State’s Attorney Eileen O’Neill Burke in a statement. “Officers who take an oath to serve the public must be held accountable when they violate that trust and abuse the tremendous responsibility that comes with it. The prosecutors in our Law Enforcement Review Unit are committed to protecting the public’s trust in law enforcement.”
The suspect in the case was ordered released pretrial, but was required to surrender his FOID card and personal weapons.
