George Russell walked away from the Belgian Grand Prix with a familiar feeling of frustration – but this time, the Mercedes driver’s anger was not aimed primarily at the rival who ended his race.
The Briton’s Spa weekend collapsed before the opening lap was even complete, after contact with Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari pitched him into the gravel at Les Combes and forced an early retirement.
Yet Russell’s real frustration came from what happened moments earlier: a failure to deploy his Mercedes power unit at the crucial moment, leaving him exposed on the fastest section of the circuit.
Starting third, Russell appeared perfectly positioned to attack the leaders after making a strong getaway. He tucked into the battle ahead through La Source and looked ready to challenge for position on the run through Eau Rouge and onto the Kemmel Straight.
Instead, the Mercedes suddenly became vulnerable.
‘Quite frankly, it was dangerous’
Russell explained that the problem began when his battery failed to recharge on the run-down to Eau Rouge, leaving him without the electrical boost needed to defend his position.
"I made a good start. I made a great first corner and I was tucked up right behind Verstappen, but for whatever reason, the battery decided not to recharge at Turn 1," Russell told reporters.
"The battery didn't charge and I exited the first corner 35% down. And because it didn't charge, I also had a boost problem. The turbo didn't sort itself out, so I had no power. I got to the top of Eau Rouge with 0% on the battery. Quite frankly, it was dangerous. I got swamped by three cars."
Russell was immediately passed by Charles Leclerc and then found himself defending from Hamilton, who attempted a move into Les Combes. The Ferrari locked into the corner and made contact with Russell’s rear tyre, sending the Mercedes spinning into the gravel.
Hamilton was handed a five-second penalty for causing the collision, but Russell insisted the incident itself was not the source of his biggest frustration.
"I shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. That's why I'm the most angry."
A painful pattern for Mercedes driver
While Hamilton carried more responsibility for the crash, according to the stewards, Russell viewed the clash as an unavoidable consequence of the earlier technical issue rather than an aggressive mistake from his former team-mate.
"Me and Lewis, honestly, I think it was a race incident," Russell said. "He didn't do it on purpose. He was more to blame than I was. But he didn't do anything reckless."

"That was one of those things I was most angry about, that I was in that position in the first place. I was in a great position after Turn 1. I was ready to fight the two guys ahead of me up to Turn 5. Instead, I got swamped by three drivers,” he added.
The retirement added another painful chapter to a turbulent 2026 campaign for Russell, who has endured a season full of setbacks despite flashes of strong pace.
Asked how he was coping with yet another disappointment, the Mercedes driver admitted the repeated blows were beginning to take their toll.
"I'm numb to the disappointment now. When it happens so often, you just get used to it,” the Briton concluded.
At Spa, Russell’s race lasted less than a minute. But his frustration lingered far longer – not because he lost a fight, but because he believes Mercedes’ failure left him unable to even contest one.
