Although a break has arrived for many Chicago-area residents seeking a reprieve from the days of hazy wildfire smoke, the improvement will be short-lived, as a new round of smoke is expected to worsen conditions this weekend.
An air quality alert remains in effect through midnight for McHenry, Lake, Kane, DuPage, Kendall, Grundy and Will counties in Illinois along with Lake, Porter, Newton and Jasper counties in Indiana. In addition, the Air Pollution Action Day and Air Quality Action Day designations remain in effect in Illinois and Indiana, respectively.
The Air Quality Index in the Chicago area is expected to reach the 100-to-150 range at times this weekend, which is considered “unhealthy for sensitive groups,” with certain spots potentially reaching the “unhealthy” range, according to IQAir. To put things into perspective, AQI values are expected to sit in the 50-to-100 range – classified as “moderate” – from around 2 p.m. through 9 p.m., before conditions change drastically, with values climbing to around 150, which is in the “unhealthy range.”
Values will likely remain at those levels through around 3 a.m. Monday until dropping back into the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” range at around 10 a.m.
The smoke arriving on Saturday is not expected to be as dense as what Chicago saw on Thursday when its AQI was the worst of any major city in the world. Still, smoke and air quality forecasts can change quickly, so you’ll want to pay close attention if you have any outdoor plans this weekend.
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Pete Sack explained a plume of smoke will likely arrive this evening and persist overnight into early Sunday. Sack said while much of the smoke is expected to stay in the upper levels of the atmosphere, air quality could still pose problems for those with respiratory conditions.
Following a chance of severe weather in the afternoon, hazy conditions are poised to return and air quality will likely slowly deteriorate through Sunday morning. Hazy sunshine is expected on Sunday, with temperatures sitting in the low 80s.
Aside from the smoke, Sunday should be pleasant, with a significant drop in humidity from the day prior. Humid conditions return on Monday alongside another round of potentially severe storms.
