The upcoming Emmy Award telecast is making some changes, and people are not happy.
This year, the Television Academy are moving five major categories out of the main broadcast. The changes are part of an effort to make the show shorter, more streamlined, and more entertaining.
According to Variety, the awards body is moving five categories from this year's Primetime Emmy Awards broadcast on September 14. They will be hosted by Mariska Hargitay, the first woman in 15 years.
The categories being moved are writing for a variety series, both supporting actor and actress in a limited/anthology series or movie, directing for a limited series/anthology or movie and writing for a limited series/anthology or movie. Instead, you can watch them at the Creative Arts Emmy ceremonies on September 5 and September 6.
Previous winners of these awards have included Beef, The White Lotusand Adolescence. This means under the new rules, audiences would have missed speeches from the likes of Jennifer Coolidge.
TV Academy chair Cris Abrego told Variety that he hopes moving the awards will create more time for musical performances, comedic bits, and unexpected acceptance speeches. “We’re really excited to flex more creativity into the show,” he said.
“This is not new, but the Academy’s always been committed to delivering an Emmy telecast that celebrates television, and also creating the best possible viewing experience," the chair added. "But it needs time, and that’s where we really want to find time to create an incredible night of entertainment that celebrates all of the Emmy winners.”

(Photo by Kevin Mazur/Getty Images)When asked why he chose these five categories to shift, Abrego said the plan was to spread them out across different disciplines. “There’s no perfect solution because every category obviously represents extraordinary work, but we really wanted just to take an approach to be as balanced and as equitable as possible,” he said.
“So then, what we really did was rather than concentrating on the change in one discipline or one peer group, it’s a small number of categories across the performances, writing and directing,” he explained.

This decision by the TV Academy has caused controversy within the industry. The DGA, SAG-AFTRA and the WGA issued a joint statement expressing their displeasure at moving five categories off the NBC telecast: “The Emmys exist to celebrate the best of television and the artists who are central to bringing these stories to life."
The statement continued: "The decision to eliminate these categories from the prime-time broadcast devalues the contributions of the talented people the Academy is meant to honor. An awards show dedicated to recognizing excellence should not reduce recognition for the artists whose work gives it meaning.”
Next Best Picture called the changes a mistake. "If the goal is to leave more time for memorable moments in the broadcast, it feels counterintuitive to skip five passionate speeches that mean a great deal to the newly minted Emmy winners and to those who are fans of the winning shows."
