They Thought They Were Going to Win MasterChef — Then They Were Eliminated

After a six-week hiatus for the Word Cup, MasterChef: Global Gauntlet returned to FOX with the 16 remaining competitors in a race to win the grand prize awarded by host/judge Gordon Ramsay, judge Joe Bastianich and judge Tiffany Derry.

As this is the Global Gauntlet season, the teams are divided up into regions of the world: Africa, Asia-Pacific, Europe and The Americas.

The challenge tonight was the second Mystery Box of the season, requiring the home cooks to create chocolate confections inspired by their heritage. With a double elimination, the competition has never been sweeter or more intense in the "Bitter Sweet Mystery Box" episode.

The person who created the best dish won the Immunity Pin for next week’s challenge, plus a full set of baking tools and utensils from Oxo worth $3000.

The home cooks were given 75 minutes to create a stunning chocolate dessert that could only come from their culinary homeland – but there was a twist.

As the winner of the Immunity Pin from the last episode, Jaime Tan was given the power to award 5 minutes extra baking time to one team, while taking 5 minutes away from another. No shocker, she awarded the extra 5 minutes to her Asia-Pacific team and she penalized Team Africa with the loss of 5 minutes.

    Top Dishes

Team Asia-Pacific: Shompa – Chocolate Chai Biscuit CakeTeam Europe: Julia – Sicilian Chocolate Ricotta CakeTeam Africa: Rita – Chocolate Puff PuffTeam Americas: Jake – Champurrado Cake

The winner of the Best Dessert and the Immunity Pin was Julia.

“I won Top Dish. I won Dish. I got the Immunity Pin,” she excitedly said. “I am on Cloud 9. I feel amazing right now. This win means everything for me, especially being the first win for Europe.”

Who was in the MasterChef: Global Gauntlet bottom three this week?

Julia’s win meant Team Europe was safe, so the bottom dishes were pulled from the remaining three areas.

Team Asia-Pacific: Daniel – Five Spice BrownieTeam Africa: Peter – Deconstructed Chocolate CakeTeam Americas: Britny – Chocolate Bajan Black Cake

The two home cooks leaving the competition were Daniel and Britny.

“It definitely hurts that I am the first person on Asia-Pacific going home,” Daniel said. “I am disappointed because I feel like I played it way too safe. I’ve learned that it’s important to take risks, not just on Masterchef but in life.”

“I am disappointed,” Britny said. “This baking challenge really got me. But I hope the Americas take the whole thing. I am glad that I got to represent Barbados.”
