SANTA MARIA, Calif. (KEYT) - The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors received a report from the Community Services Department at yesterday’s monthly meeting in Santa Maria.
Recent statistics were presented, as well as recommendations moving forward.
In the most general sense, the prevalence of people experiencing homelessness over the last 2 years is sustained at a level improved from the last 3 to 5 years.
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, homelessness saw peak levels during the 2023 studies.
In 2024, Governor Newsom ordered encampments to be cleaned out statewide.
The data presented at Tuesday’s meeting reflects mentionable improvements in the homelessness response system, and notes areas where improvements are still needed.
The amount of people experiencing homelessness throughout the county has decreased by 6% between 2023 and 2025.
Another trend the report notes as positive is a 31% decrease in how many people are accessing assistance services.
One troubling trend is an increase of days people remain unhoused after enrolling in services, up to 190 days for this report compared to 134 days in 2023.
Another negative note is a 7% decrease from 2023 in those who have successfully transitioned into permanent housing, despite a slight increase compared to 2024.
The subject of vehicular homelessness received significant discussion at Tuesday’s meeting acknowledging that, despite it being illegal, many are choosing to live in their cars due to unaffordable housing.
Future efforts for the county’s Homelessness Alliance: Response and Prevention team include developing a centralized data hub so separate agencies and departments can better coordinate, as well as strategies to leverage time available during each work day.
