Lizzo Gets Candid About Her Recent 20-Pound Weight Gain

Lizzo is opening up about how she recently gained 20 pounds.

The beloved "Truth Hurts" hip-hop icon, 38, has been quite candid about her weight loss journey in recent years. But as anyone working toward their health knows, the journey isn't always linear. In a new interview, the music star revealed that she actually gained 20 pounds over the last year after hitting her goal weight in January 2025.

    "I've gained 20 pounds since last year," Lizzo explained to The Guardian. "So everyone can ask me about weight gain, too, if they'd like."

    She continued, explaining that her initial pursuit of weight loss was to better her health.

    "There are a lot of reasons," she noted when asked why she chose to start a weight loss journey years ago. "People always want to make it one single headline, one single thing. A lot of things can be true at once."

    "I was in a place where my physical weight was causing joint pain and aches," she shared. "I also got to the point where I came off the internet, and all I had was the studio and my thoughts. So I poured myself into the things I could control. My body, my lifestyle. My routines and habits."

    While many assumed her initial weight loss was with a drug like Ozempic, Lizzo wanted to make it clear that's not true.

    Lizzo previously told podcaster Trisha Paytas that keeping her diet in check is essential.

    “What did it for me was— actually, it was not being vegan,” Lizzo shared during a June 19 episode of the Just Trish podcast. “Because when I was vegan, I was consuming a lot of fake meats. I was eating a lot of bread. I was eating a lot of rice, and I had to eat a lot of it to stay full. But really I was consuming like 3,000 to 5,000 calories a day.” 

     Lizzo praised whole foods and eating beef, chicken, and fish. She told Today that she cut out sugary coffee drinks, full-fat sodas, and potato chips. She also limits alcohol.

    As for workouts, Lizzo shared that she trains three times a week. She also does cardio and daily saunas.

    “I play pickleball and hike and walk on the beach and move my body and dance and drink water. I detox! Once a month! I also get holistic body work done, wood therapy, and lymphatic massage,” she noted.

    While weight loss is always challenging, Lizzo seems to have found peace with her food issues. She told Women’s Health last July that she’s discovered “a beautiful balance” with how food co-exists with her everyday life, a sharp contrast to her past struggles with overeating.

    “It’s a beautiful balance where it’s like, if you allow yourself to have something, you can enjoy it without overindulging and hurting yourself,” she said. “I’m so proud of myself for overcoming that.”
