Trevon Brazile shines with 32 points in Denver Nuggets Summer League win vs OKC

The Denver Nuggets were back on the floor on Tuesday night against the vaunted Oklahoma City Thunder in Summer League. First round draft picks Aday Mara and Bennett Stirtz represented the Thunder against second round picks Trevon Brazile, Bryce Hopkins and the Nuggets.

Well, the second round picks emerged victorious on the night with a close 106-103 Nuggets victory. The Nuggets controlled the game for the vast majority of time, but a late Thunder run with some three-point shooting made things interesting.

It was Trevon Brazile who shined brightest though, leading all scorers with 32 points in one of the best shooting displays of his career. Brazile shot 11-of-19 from the field and 6-of-12 from deep, hitting five of those three-pointers in an impressive first half display. That featured a buzzer beater at the end of the half with just 0.6 seconds remaining on the clock.

With 0.6 remaining on the shot clock, Trevon Brazile banks in the buzzer-beater 3-pointer to end the 1st half, from almost halfcourt (with replays)

The Nuggets constantly used the pick-and-pop game to attack Mara, the 7’3″ Thunder center with perimeter mobility concerns. While Denver gave up some points on the interior due to Mara’s size, it was Brazile who absolutely shredded the drop coverage, punishing the Thunder for not contesting his jumper with more consistency.

Brazile, Denver’s 35th overall pick who reportedly signed a full-time contract, had a stretch of minutes in the first quarter when he hit three three-pointers in a row and then followed it up with a windmill dunk in transition. It was a real coming out party for him in a Nuggets uniform, and fans can be excited that he isn’t shy to take those shots while having the athleticism to impact the game in other ways.

Hopkins, Denver’s 49th overall pick who has had plenty of success so far, took more of a back seat role with 14 points and 7 rebounds. Hopkins continued attacking the glass but started out early in the game hitting a three-pointer of his own. Hopkins grabbed three offensive rebounds and continues to show a propensity for toughness in the paint.

Erik Stevenson and Osayi Osifo wrapped up Denver’s remaining double-digit point scorers. Stevenson had 12 points and shows nice feel for how to find jumpers within the flow of the offense. His three-point stroke looks very clean and compact. Osifo had 11 points and continues to be an explosive, energizing player, adding a steal and a block in his 13 bench minutes.

Among other notables from tonight were Devon Jarreau with 8 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in his bench minutes, setting the table nicely for Brazile in the pick-and-pop. Also, Aaron Nkrumah got his first major summer minutes and shot the ball well. I hope to see how he looks in future minutes.
