Around the NFL: Payton’s Plans For Belichick, Meet the Seahawks New Owners, World Cup, More

During the summer, NFL players work on tweaking their game so they can be better in the upcoming year than the previous one. Likewise, during the summer, I spend a lot of time tweaking my writing style so I can be better in the year ahead. I was recently wondering what it would look like if I did a look around the NFL in the style of my usual morning BN Bears Bullets.

With that as our table-setter, let’s take a quick look at some NFL (and NFL-adjacent) headlines.

One of the most interesting things I’ve read recently is this story from ESPN’s Seth Wickersham, who shares what he learned while embedded with the Denver Broncos during the team’s run to the AFC Championship Game last January. You don’t often see coaches granting inside access to reporters like this, so I encourage you to give it a full read when you get a chance. In the meantime, this excerpt about Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton’s plan to let Bill Belichick coach his way into the record books was a mind-blowing anecdote:

“Payton and Belichick go back decades, forged by mutual respect — and mutual trauma from working under Parcells. When Belichick and the Patriots divorced in 2024, Payton considered presenting Broncos owner Greg Penner a proposal for the ages: Hire Belichick as head coach until he reached 15 wins, enough to break Don Shula’s career record of 347. Payton would temporarily step down to assistant head coach and run the offense, then move back after Belichick became the all-time leader. In the end, it was too complicated — and maybe too fanciful.”

Sure, that would have been too weird and complicated to pull off. But I like weird and complicated. Sometimes, weird and complicated can be fun. As it stands, Belichick remains 14 games behind Don Shula on the all-time total NFL wins list. And so long as he is coaching at the University of North Carolina, I don’t see Belichick passing the Miami Dolphins’ legendary coach. My favorite Bill Belichick fun fact is that he is 0-1 in head-to-head battles against Matt Eberflus. No, seriously. Eberflus and the Bears beat Belichick in 2022 in the only head-to-head matchup the two had. And it happened in a Monday Night Football affair that kept Belichick from passing George “Papa Bear” Halas on the wins list — at least for another week.

Five months after winning the Super Bowl, the Seattle Seahawks have a new owner. John Breech (CBS Sports) has details on the NFL record-setting $9.6 billion price tag, who bought the team, and why a hefty chunk of the purchase price will go to charity. The Seahawks’ sale eclipses the $6.05 billion price that Josh Harris paid when he bought the Washington Commanders in July 2023. Whenever a pro sports team goes on sale, I stop and think about how much the Bears would go for if they were put on the market. Am I the only one who thinks about that? Rebilas-Imagn Images Free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs says he is the NFL’s best No. 2 wide receiver. “My opinion, I can compete with anybody,” Diggs said in a video posted last week to his YouTube channel, via ESPN. “But take those [top wide receivers] as your 1s, right? You can’t name a No. 2 better than me. … There’s not a No. 2 on a team — let’s presumably give people the credit and just say, ‘OK, you want to take the No. 1 spot away,'” he said. “Name your No. 2 receiver right now, and tell me how much he makes, and then my last question is: Is he better than me?” I’m so glad the Bears are set at wide receiver. The Athletic has a rundown of the most interesting stories (on and off the field) that you might have missed during the NFL offseason. It is a pretty wide-ranging collection of stories, including anecdotes about the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding, Caleb Williams getting the Madden NFL ’27 cover, World Cup shenanigans, and more. I always say that the NFL doesn’t have an offseason. And that we have so many subplots and storylines that popped up this summer serves as a reminder that this league slows down for nobody. Speaking of the World Cup, Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio opines that the soccer frenzy helps explain the NFL’s obsession with globalization. But he also notes that the league has so much more work to do before it reaches the heights of popularity that fútbol has on a global scale. Old friend JJ Stankevitz writes about Adam Vinatieri getting inducted into the Indianapolis Colts’ Ring of Honor later this season. The Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker is set to become the 21st honoree in the Ring of Honor. Vinatieri missed just one kick in his career against the Bears (15/15 PATs, 16/18 FGs — this includes playoffs). The Houston Texans share the news that franchise co-founder Janice McNair has passed away. She was 89 years old:
