He would be like, 'Oh for goodness sake I just got over my cancer and now look, now I get pneumonia. What next? But he's on his big journey now'."
Neill revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of blood cancer, in 2022. Earlier this year, however, scans found he was cancer-free. While it’s not clear if the pneumonia was related to his death, Te Wiata remembered Neill as someone who brought a calming presence wherever he went. "He was a very steady, peaceful, grounded man," she said per the outlet, who shared the news on Monday, July 13. "He was more like a lovely gardener, someone who was doing the vege garden or something. There was sort of a gentlemanly demeanour that went along with it." ? His Jurassic Park co-star Laura Dern told People, "Sam was my beloved lifetime friend… He showed me the depths of loyalty, protectiveness and love always with the driest of wit." She added, "He was a true and noble gentleman, wrapped up in my dream leading man. I will love you forever, Dr. Alan Grant."
Director Steven Spielbergalso reflected on working with Neill, saying, "Sam was exceptionally collaborative," before adding, "I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him."
