MONROE COUNTY, N.Y. — Monroe County Executive Adam Bello has introduced legislation to provide a property tax exemption for qualifying veterans.
The proposed law would opt Monroe County into New York State’s expanded tax exemption program, giving financial relief to honorably discharged veterans who are permanently and totally disabled from military service. Officials said this is only one small way to pay back those who have sacrificed so much for their country and fellow citizens.
“They no longer have the earning potential prior to service because of what happened in the military so if we want them to live in our state we want to say to them that what they’re doing is meaningful to this country we have to be able to provide something that helps them,” said Laura Heltz, executive director of the Veterans Outreach Center.
The exemption would apply to their primary residence, reducing the county portion of property tax bills. The County Legislature is expected to vote on the measure in August.
