We knew for years that St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker had loads of power in his bat, but it wasn’t until this season that he finally tweaked his swing enough to actually show it in games. His 22 homers in the first half are tied for the 10th most in baseball, and he improved on that in last night’s Home Run Derby, slugging his way to the final against Kyle Schwarber, and ultimately winning.
Walker homered on six straight swings to walk it off, as it were:
That’s a trophy for Walker, and a nice $1 million prize.
Beating the local Schwarber in Philadelphia, you can imagine that Walker heard his fair share of boos throughout the night. Philly fans are relentless.
“I was once told you don’t boo nobody,” Walker said on the field as he received his trophy. “So it feels pretty good …. My thought was, ‘Philly is brutal.’ I mean, honestly. But I think it’s pretty special because they love their players and that’s what you want from your home … I can’t hate them, because that’s their guy.”
Walker, 24, is the first Cardinals player to win the Home Run Derby. He’s hitting .294/.354/.532/143 wRC+ on the season, after slashing just .240/.302/.378/89 wRC+ in the three seasons previous. The Cardinals have him under team control for three more seasons after this, though I wouldn’t be surprised if they try to engage in some extension talks, pairing Walker with the recently-inked JJ Wetherholt for years to come in the middle of that lineup.
