University of Connecticut Slashes Funding for Club Sports

Budget restraints at the University of Connecticut Recreation have led to the termination of several UConn club sports.

The club sports sector underwent structural changes at the beginning of the spring semester, which forced student teams to fund their programs through club fundraising and financial support from the Undergraduate Student Government.

In a report by The Daily Campus, the university released a statement explaining that it has been facing “funding shortfalls and other revenue reductions.”

“[The university] has been working to address fiscal constraints throughout this budget year as it faces state funding shortfalls and other revenue reductions,” as said in the report from The Daily Campus. “This has required cost-containment plans throughout the institution, including the Division of Student Life & Enrollment and UConn Recreation.”

Funding for each club team continued through the end of the spring semester, while the new changes were implemented on July 1.

According to The Daily Campus report, the “FY26 and FY27 SLE Department Budget Reduction Recommendations show a $400,000 proposed expense reduction for fiscal year 2027, a $100,000 decrease from the current budget.” That budget also shows $123,000 allocated to club sports funding in FY27.

UConn’s recreation page currently lists 21 club sports; both swimming and water polo are included. Last year, the university recognized and supported 36 teams. Among those that were vip was the UConn Ski Team.

“We received an email from the Rec basically saying that because we didn’t meet certain requirements that they had, we would no longer be considered a club sport,” said sixth-semester ski team Secretary Nathan Zimbelman in the report from The Daily Campus.

The ski team ran practices out of Vermont and New Hampshire. Fellow ski team member Trevor Buckeridge also weighed in on the situation, as the university had “no clear operation purpose” for programs that operated outside of  their own facilities.

“All club teams lost their funding, but only teams that do not use UConn-managed facilities — including the ski team — were also removed from Club Sports and transitioned to Registered Student Organizations,” Buckridge said. “In their communication, Recreation stated that for teams operating outside their facilities, ‘there is no longer a clear operational purpose for remaining within the Club Sports program.'”

Teams that were removed were informed of the decision via an email that framed the situation as an “opportunity” for teams.

Buckridge said the email wrote “that the transition ‘provides an opportunity for teams to continue their activities outside of Club Sports,'” though “In reality, what is being labeled as an opportunity is the removal of funding, structure, and institutional support that teams have relied on for years. That language feels not only misleading but dismissive of the very real impact on student-athletes.”
