With a lefty on the mound for Milwaukee, one with traditional lefty/righty splits this season, Craig Counsell is loading up his lineup with righties.

That includes Tyrone Taylor not only playing left field for Ian Happ, but also batting cleanup in the Cubs lineup. Taylor has been very good offensively for the Cubs since joining the team on August 4 (150 wRC+ in 44 PAs), and has been the very monster versus left-handed pitching the Cubs hoped he would be all season: .315/.344/.562 (149 wRC+). Could be a difference maker for the Cubs tonight.

But that’s not the only change. Pedro Ramirez (a switch-hitter) is also getting a day off his feet, which is probably a good idea, even if he has also been really hitting lefties well all year. Matt Shaw is a lefty masher himself, and I bet we get both in the Cubs lineup against another Brewers lefty, Robert Gasser, tomorrow.

Lastly, Carson Kelly is behind the plate, but the other catcher, Miguel Amaya, is the DH. That leaves the bench with Ian Happ (S), Pedro Ramirez (S), Michael Conforto (L), and Gabriel Arias (R).

As you might expect, Amaya has also been better against lefties this season: .273/.385/.364 (119 wRC+).

Remember, the 2026 Chicago Cubs are the best offense in MLB against left-handed pitching (126 wRC+).

Chicago Cubs: Clay Holmes, RHP

After one tune-up start against the Royals, Clay Holmes has been absolutely excellent in three straight for Chicago.

Across three starts against the Cardinals, White Sox, and Diamondbacks, Holmes has allowed just a TOTAL of 14 baserunners in 19.0 IP. That plays. You know what else plays? His 66.1% groundball rate. The strikeouts have been lacking in all four of his starts, but when you’re forcing the other team into the ground at that frequency, while limiting free passes well enough, you’re going to succeed.

Unless, of course, the Brewers have some crazy BABIP luck … what’s that? They have the second-highest BABIP in MLB this year? And it’s the single-highest mark against righties? Cool. Cool. I’m sure that totally won’t come into play tonight.

Jokes aside, there is one additional piece of good news: The Brewers have the highest groundball rate in MLB against right-handed pitching this season. With the wind blowing out tonight, that could be very good news for the Cubs (groundball pitcher versus a groundball heavy team).

Milwaukee Brewers: Kyle Harrison, LHP

Kyle Harrison has had an excellent first season in Milwaukee (because of course), earning a 2.79 ERA over 21 starts and 103.1 IP. He did spend about a month on the IL with forearm tightness, returning on August 5. But that doesn’t seem to have slowed him down … like, at all: 1.83 ERA over four starts.

The Cubs have faced Harrison twice already this season. The first time, he absolutely shut them down, with seven scoreless innings that featured 11 strikeouts against just two hits and one walk. They had a little more luck in the second matchup (5.0 IP, 3H, 2ER, 1BB, 9K), but he clearly still had their number.

And finally, although Harrison is split neutral for his career, righties are hitting him better this season, which strikes me as notable, seeing as it was his first season with a new team and a slightly different pitch mix.
