Residents in nearly a dozen Illinois counties that were hit hard by storms earlier this year may be eligible for tax relief, including Cook County.
According to Gov. JB Pritzker’s office and the Illinois Department of Revenue, taxpayers in 11 counties can request a waiver of penalties and interest if severe weather prevents them from filing tax returns or making payments on time. Relief is available for taxpayers in the following areas covered by a state disaster proclamation: Coles, Cook, Effingham, Jefferson, Kankakee, LaSalle, McLean, Stephenson, Warren, Winnebago and Woodford counties.
Any counties added later will also be eligible, officials said.
The proclamation applies to storm damage that occurred between March 10 and June 21.
The tax relief covers income, withholding, sales, specialty and excise taxes for both businesses and residents. The Motor Fuel Use Tax is not included, however.
Looking to get a waiver?
Taxpayers must submit a brief written explanation to IDOR about why they cannot file on time or pay. The request should include their full name, account number, mailing address and an estimate of when they believe they can file or pay their taxes.
Requests can be submitted electronically by emailing [email protected] or by mail using the address on the return. According to officials, when submitting by mail, taxpayers should write “Severe Storms – Summer 2026” at the top of the return in red ink and attach or include the explanation for requesting abatement of penalties and interest.
Property owners seeking a reassessment due to any damage should contact their county supervisor of assessments.
