Several breakout athletes were among this morning’s heats, including 18-year-old national record holder Luca Hoek of Spain.
Hoek topped the boys’ 100m freestyle heats, producing a morning outing of 49.11 to hold a slight advantage over a pair of Neutral Athletes.
Matvei Miliaev is next in line at 49.20, with teammate Egor Proshin rounding out the top tier in 49.43.
Lithuania’s Tajus Juska is also in the mix, courtesy of his morning swim of 49.43. Juska was the silver medalist in this race last year and is also the reigning World Junior Championships bronze medalist.
Going back to Hoek, the teen represents the first-ever man from Spain to clear the 48-second barrier in this 1free event. While competing at the Spanish Open Championships last month, he set a lifetime best of 47.72 to nail the new national standard and make history.
He’ll be seeking to upgrade the silver he earned last night in the 50m free event in pursuit of repeating as the European Junior champion in this event.
Speedy swims were produced in this morning’s boys’ 50m fly event as well, with the 50m freestyle champion here, Jan Foltyn of Czechia, reaching the wall first in 23.74.
However, the 18-year-old was not alone, as Hungarian David Antal posted the exact same time to share #1 seed honors.
Dean Fearn of Great Britain lurks as the 3rd-seeded swimmer, only .01 behind in 23.75. Fearn won this event both at the European Junior Championships (23.29) and at the World Junior Championships. (23.54), so look for him to put up an even quicker result in this evening’s semi-finals.
On the girls’ side of the house, Varvara Filippova reaped the top seed in the 100m backstroke, notching an AM swim of 1:01.26.
That earned a narrow edge over Spain’s Irene Ciercoles, already a multi-medalist here, who nabbed the runner-up spot in 1:01.27.
Jeanne Lechevalier of France and Eva Rottink of the Netherlands already landed on the 200m backstroke podium yesterday evening, with the former claiming gold and the latter bagging the bronze. Out of the heats, Lechevalier turned in a time of 1:01.45 to be positioned as the 3rd seed, with Rottink sitting less than half a second behind in 1:01.84.
Also very much in the mix is Romania’s national record holder Daria-Mariuca Silisteanu.
The 17-year-old produced 1:01.96 as the 6th-seeded swimmer, but owns a PB of 59.63 in this event from April’s Romanian Championshps. Silisteanu is the reigning gold medalist in this race and also collected silver at last year’s World Junior Championships.
France is looking for more hardware in the girls’ 50m fly, with Andreanne Bourseul beating the pack this morning in a time of 26.47. That’s already within striking distance of her best-ever performance, a result of 26.24 established just last month.
Spanish athlete Carlota Rodriguez produced a mark of 26.63 as the 2nd-seeded swimmer, with Germany’s Lara Vandenhirtz next in 26.69.
The Netherlands’ Jinth Engelse, who is just 16 years of age, nabbed the 4th seed in 26.85, although her lifetime best sits at a much speedier benchmark of 26.36 from just a week ago.
Additional Notes
Greek ace Evangelos Efraim Ntoumas already earned silver in the boys’ 200m breast last night and the 18-year-old Stanford commit is hunting more hardware in the 100m breast race. This morning he produced a field-leading mark of 1:01.08 to hold a healthy advantage over Louis Hoffmann of Germany and Max Morgan of Great Britain. This pair earned the same time, 1:01.44, to set themselves up for potential success this evening. Ntoumas scored silver in this event last year in Slovakia, while Morgan bagged the bronze at the 2025 World Junior Championships. Italy’s Gabriele Garzia lurks as the 4th seed as a follow-up to his bronze behind Ntoumas in last night’s 200m breast. France’s Nathan Muratory ripped a monster lifetime best of 1:55.88 to top the boys’ 200m backstroke podium last night and now the University of Michigan commit has designs on the 100m back event. The Frenchman stopped the clock this morning at 54.60, already the 5th-swiftest performance of his young career. Muratory, who earned bronze in this event at last year’s edition of the competition, owns a lifetime best of 53.45 from a domestic meet earlier this season, so look for him to drop even more time in the second round. Additional qualifiers for tonight’s semi-finals include Neutral Athlete Mikhail Shcherbakov (55.20) and Italy’s Pietro Remorini (55.42). Of note, Fearn also appeared in this race along with the 50m fly from earlier. The Brit captured the 8th seed in a mark of 55.60 but has been as fast as 54.82 in this event. The girls’ 100m breaststroke saw just one swimmer clearing the 1:09 barrier, with Neutral Athlete Sofia Anufrieva topping the field in 1:08.92. Ukraine’s Yana Klikotsa earned the 2nd seed in 1:09.36, with Belarusian Alisa Belaya also making the cut in 1:09.39. Additional swimmers on which to keep an eye in tonight’s semi-finals are Great Britain’s Imogen Myles (1:10.21) and Switzerland’s Kay-Lyn Lohr (1:09.68). Both landed on the 200m breast podium during yesterday’s final, with the former becoming this year’s champion and the latter finishing with the silver in that event. Finally, Anna Rzaeva posted the fastest time of the morning in the girls’ 200m IM. She produced an outing of 2:15.92, already a personal best by over a second. Poland’s Barbara Lesniewska clocked 2:16.35 followed by British swimmer Evi Mackie who notched 2:16.53. Last year it took 2:12.62 from Great Britain’s Amalie Smith to claim the gold, so we’ll be expecting these athletes to drop major time in tonight’s second round.Read the full story on SwimSwam: France’s Muratory Seeking Another Backstroke Gold At 2026 European Junior Championships
