15 Included Extras That Make a Disney Cruise Worth Every Penny (Including One Most Passengers Skip)

I've been cruising for years, but it wasn't until I stepped aboard a Disney Cruise Line ship for the first time that I realized just how much magic could be folded into one cruise fare.

My family spans three generations, so I'm always on the lookout for trips that give everyone—from my kids to their grandparents—plenty to look forward to each day. On a Disney cruise, it’s all included in the price: movies under the stars, dramatically different dining experiences every night, Broadway-quality shows and fireworks lighting up the night sky.

By my third Disney cruise, I thought I knew about all the line's best complimentary offerings. But then I stumbled upon a free activity I'd somehow overlooked on my previous sailings—and it instantly became my favorite experience onboard.

Here's why every Disney cruiser should make time for it, along with the other included perks I never skip.

    Join an Incredible Walking Tour

If you take just one piece of advice from this story, let it be this: don't skip the free guided ship tour.

Disney's Imagineering-led design is legendary, and every Disney ship is its own immersive, story-driven destination. I joined the "Art of the Theme Show" walking tour aboard the Disney Wish (led by entertainment cast member Sebastian), and it completely blew me away.

I'd sailed on the Disney Wish once before and even watched the Disney+ documentary about its creation, but the hour-long tour still revealed countless details I never would have known existed otherwise—like the kraken carved into the woodwork (clutching Disney treasures, no less) at Keg & Compass and the real constellations mapped onto the ceiling at Luna. We learned that the ship’s two movie theaters feature matching murals of Wendy Darling and Alice in Wonderland, a special nod to Disney legend Kathryn Beaumont, the actress who voiced both characters. The tour was extraordinary.

These tours typically run on sea days; check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app once onboard for times. (Just don't confuse this with the free embarkation-day walking tour, which is a more general ship overview.)

Ride the AquaMouse, AquaDuck or AquaDunk

Disney's AquaMouse water coaster can be found on all of the line's Wish-class ships.

Water-slide devotees, take note: Disney's signature water coasters are unlike anything else at sea.

Look for AquaMouseon the Wish-class ships (Wish, Treasure and Destiny), AquaDuck on the Disney Dream and Fantasy and AquaDunk on the Disney Magic. AquaMouse alone is worth the trip — a 760-foot water coaster that sends two-person rafts through twisting tubes, hills and drops, complete with lighting effects and animated storytelling. Our whole family loved it, and it's the kind of ride you'll want to do on repeat.

    Celebrate Pirate Night

Disney Cruise Line's Pirate Night is a long-running tradition featuring deck parties with performances and more.

Pirate Night is Disney Cruise Line's most beloved tradition: a ship-wide takeover with Caribbean-themed dinners, character meet-and-greets, photo ops, deck parties and (on most Caribbean and Bahamian sailings) fireworks at sea.

Disney leaves complimentary red pirate bandanas and chocolate gold coins in every stateroom, and plenty of guests wear full pirate costumes or cheeky pirate t-shirts. There's something for every age group, too: younger cruisers will enjoy the earlier Mickey's Pirates in the Caribbean deck party, while the later rock-and-roll-themed Pirates Rockin' Parlay Party draws a crowd of all ages.

Meet Disney Characters, Onboard and On the Islands

There are many opportunities to meet Disney characters on a Disney cruise, such as at Disney's private island destination Castaway Cay in the Bahamas.

Character encounters happen constantly on a Disney cruise, from spontaneous hallway run-ins to scheduled meet-and-greets. Characters include classic favorites like Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy and Pluto, as well as Marvel heroes, Star Wars characters and Disney princesses. Track locations and times through the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app once onboard.

One standout: the Royal Gathering, a free event where guests can meet multiple princesses at once. It requires an advance reservation which opens 30 days before sailing, so set a calendar reminder.

On Caribbean and Bahamian sailings, Disney characters also make appearances onshore at Disney’s island destinations.

    Watch a Broadway-Caliber Show

If you love live theater, you’ll be dazzled by Disney Cruise Line’s nightly theatrical performances; these are Broadway-quality productions, all included in your fare. On a typical cruise, the Walt Disney Theatre is where you’ll see everything from Hercules battling monsters in Disney Hercules to a full winter transformation during "Let It Go" in Frozen: A Musical Spectacular to a showstopping "Friend Like Me" number in Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular.

The lineup is ship-specific and rotates, so different sailings mean different full-scale musicals, but all are absolutely stunning.Related: I’ve Been on Every Disney Cruise. If You Have Kids, Book This Exact Ship Next

    Catch Fireworks at Sea

Disney Cruise Line's Fireworks at Sea can be seen on most Bahamian and Caribbean sailings.

Photo by Kent Phillips, courtesy of Disney

Disney Cruise Line is the only cruise line permitted to launch fireworks at sea, and the shows are just as spectacular as the nightly fireworks displays at the theme parks.

Fireworks at Sea displays typically happen on Pirate Night for most Bahamian and Caribbean sailings. For the best view, head to the starboard (right) side of the ship on an upper deck—Disney always launches from that side, so it offers the clearest, most unobstructed sightline.

Dine at a Different Restaurant Every Night

The Lion King-inspired dining venue Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King can be found aboard the Disney Destiny.

Photo by Steven Diaz, courtesy of Disney

Disney's rotational dining is one of its smartest innovations: you rotate through three distinct themed restaurants over the course of the cruise, with the same serving team following you each night. The scheduling works around the theater’s show times, so some guests dine early and catch the show after, while others do the reverse.

My favorites are the dinner theater-style venues—Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure, a Frozen-themed experience aboard the Disney Wish, and Pride Lands: Feast of The Lion King, a venue inspired by The Lion King aboard the Disney Destiny. Also worth seeking out is 1923, found across all of the Wish-class ships, which pairs an upscale dining experience with a museum of thousands of Disney animation artifacts.

Drop the Kids at the Kids' Clubs

The Marvel Super Hero Academy is an interactive, high-tech training center for kids located inside Disney's Oceaneer Club on select Disney cruise ships.

Disney Cruise Line's complimentary youth programming is the best my family has ever experienced on a cruise ship—so wonderful, in fact, that my kids would happily spend all day and evening in the kids’ clubs if they could. On the Wish-class ships, kids can even enter Disney's Oceaneer Club via a slide from the Grand Hall.

Hours run long on sea days (typically 9 a.m. to midnight), with age-specific programming: the Oceaneer Club (ages 4–10), Edge (ages 11–14) and Vibe (ages 14–17). The “it's a small world” nursery covers babies and toddlers six months to three years for a nominal fee, and the 1820 Society offers an exclusive social club for young adults 18 to 20.

Sneak Off to an Adults-Only Lounge

The Rose is an exclusive, adults-only cocktail lounge found on Disney's Wish-class ships.

In addition to its phenomenal family offerings, Disney Cruise Line also takes adult cruisers seriously, with dedicated dining rooms (Palo, Remy and Enchanté, available at an extra cost) and adults-only spaces like the Quiet Cove Pool on all Disney ships, complete with its own coffee shop—one of my favorite spots.

Don't skip the themed lounges, either. Some are adults-only around the clock, while others transform into adults-only spaces after dark. Standouts include the Haunted Mansion Parlor on the Disney Destiny and Treasure, and The Rose, an elegant Beauty and the Beast-inspired cocktail lounge on Disney’s Wish-class ships.

    Dance at a Deck Party

Disney Cruise Line is known for its high-energy deck parties, such as the line's iconic "Let's Set Sail" sail away deck party.

Photo courtesy of Kent Phillips, courtesy of Disney

Disney knows how to throw a party. Pool decks regularly transform into full performance venues for dancing, character appearances and shows, including the popular "Let's Set Sail" sail away celebration.

But the most memorable are the Pirate deck parties, featuring Captain Jack Sparrow or Minnie Mouse along with a host of pirates and Disney characters. On Alaska sailings, a Frozen-themed “Freezing the Night Away” deck party and theme night takes center stage.

    Experience Disney’s Island Destinations

Disney Cruise Line's private island destination Castaway Cay is a popular stop among cruisers.

Photo by Matt Stroshane, courtesy of Disney

If you’re sailing on a 3 to 5-night Bahamian or Caribbean sailing departing from Florida (Port Canaveral or Fort Lauderdale), you’ll likely be stopping at one or both of Disney’s exclusive island destinations; both are gorgeous and magnificent.Castaway Cay, Disney's original private island in the Bahamas, remains one of the line's most iconic stops, with family beaches, a dedicated kids' area and the adults-only beach Serenity Bay. Disney’s newest island destination is Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Pointon Eleuthera, which opened in 2024 and includes family and adult-exclusive beaches, Bahamian cultural experiences at the Goombay Cultural Center, a splash zone and island-inspired BBQ, all included in your fare.

Both offer paid excursion options like snorkeling or cabana rentals, but you can easily spend a wonderful, completely free day under swaying palms, eating a delicious lunch and swimming in aquamarine water.

Catch a Movie, Poolside or in the Theater

Wonderland Cinema is one of two movie theaters found aboard Disney's Wish-class ships.

Photo by Amy Smith, courtesy of Disney Cruise Line

Disney's movie catalog seems endless, and Disney Cruise Line puts it to good use. New theatrical releases debut at sea the same day they open on land, so you can catch first-run movies in the ship’s cinemas or during special showings in the ship’s theater. On our sailing earlier this summer, we caught first-run showings of Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

For something more nostalgic, the pool deck doubles as an open-air cinema. Watching The Lion King or Moana under the stars with a warm sea breeze is a different experience entirely than watching at home.

Grab a Free Soft-Serve Cone or Mickey Bar

Complimentary quick-service ice cream locations can be found on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

Poolside food options on Disney cruises are plentiful—including tacos, Disney’s famous chicken tenders, barbecue and pizza—but the unlimited soft-serve ice cream is the real standout. Flavors rotate daily; keep an eye out for the coconut-pineapple swirl (one of my favorite discoveries aboard the Disney Destiny).

Room service is also included with your cruise fare, and for ice cream fans, there’s a “secret” menu item not printed anywhere but usually available round-the-clock: a Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bar. Just call room service from your stateroom phone and ask.

Get Crafty with Activities for All Ages

Disney's complimentary craft sessions cover a full range of art projects, from painting suncatchers to designing door hangers to Disney Animation workshops. Some sessions are for families, while others are for adults.

Times and themes are listed in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app. We loved the craft sessions; we especially loved painting suncatchers and decorating door magnets.

    Play Trivia and Game Shows

A Disney music trivia session held inside Luna, a two-story venue found aboard the Disney Wish.

If you think you know cruise trivia, you haven’t done trivia on a Disney cruise. Disney cruise ships feature daily sessions themed around the parks, ultimate Disney trivia or general knowledge, alongside interactive game shows. Programming is generally family-friendly during the day and more adult-oriented at night, with some shows staged right in the Grand Hall.

One standout from our recent cruise was "Who's Behind the Curtain," a game show where the audience answers questions to unmask a hidden Disney character. It was free, fun and one of our family’s favorite activities onboard.

It's moments like these that make me rethink what "included" can mean on a cruise, and a reminder that some of the best Disney magic doesn't require an extra charge at all.
