If San Diego Wave FC is to win its second NWSL Supporters’ Shield, and even lift its first championship trophy, the club will have to do it without Dudinha.

The forward, and a star on the Brazilian national team, suffered a ruptured ACL and meniscus in her right knee during an international friendly against the U.S. women’s national team on June 9, injuries which will keep her out for the remainder of the season.

Even without Dudinha, the Wave got off to a great start in its first game back from a month-long mandated break, which coincided with the group stage of the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup. The squad beat Gotham FC 2-0 on July 4 at Snapdragon Stadium.

“Dudinha was one of the best players in the league in the spring and, of course, we can’t just replace her for a like-by-like player,” said head coach Jonas Eidevall. “We have to find a different way for our left side to work and attack. We saw elements of that against Gotham, but this is a work in progress and we will need to continue to strengthen those relationships.”

She is currently the top scorer for the team with five goals over 13 starts, and also contributed four assists, which leads the club, alongside midfielder Lia Godfrey.

San Diego Wave FC acquired Dudinha on a three-year contract a year ago. She made her debut three weeks later, coming on as a stoppage-time substitute for midfielder Delphine Cascarino.

“I think, obviously, it’s hard news to hear but we have a lot of depth and talent on our team,” said Wave forward Trinity Byars. “We have girls that can step up to the plate. I think with so much talent that we have, we’ll be able to continue to have success.”

Byars, who recently signed a contract extension through the 2028 season, came in as a substitute in the 68th minute versus Gotham and scored the insurance goal in the final moments. Teammate Melanie Barcenas gave SD Wave the lead in the 45th minute on a left-footed shot from 25 yards out.

San Diego Wave currently stands atop the NWSL table with 28 points and next faces Angel City FC at 5:45 p.m. Saturday at Snapdragon.
