A San Diego man pleaded guilty in Florida on June 25 to mailing a threatening letter to conservative podcaster Benny Johnson in 2025 after the assassination of Charlie Kirk. George Russel Isbell Jr. of City Heights will face the maximum penalty of five years in federal prison, according to the US Attorney’s office for the Middle District of Florida. No sentencing date has been set. The San Diego businessman is the owner of three adult bookstores and a longtime San Diego resident. Isbell sent the letter on Sept. 18, 2025, to Johnson, a close friend of Kirk, eight days after his assassination at Utah Valley University. Isbell sent the letter after becoming “angered” by Johnson referring to himself as a “sensation”. Johnson’s wife opened the letter delivered to their home in Tampa and contacted the police after opening. In his letter, Isbell wished the podcaster should die, attacking Johnson for spewing hatred and stoking the emotions of his “racist” followers. Isbell described Johnson as “Charlie Kirk Jr.” “The saddest part of your drivel is your contamination of naïve minds. Maybe someone will blow your head off!!! We can hope! Planning any public engagements? Love to see your head explode and your blood stain the concrete red. What a sight!” Isbell’s letter said. Officials opened an investigation after Johnson’s wife contacted the police, and it was sent to a forensic lab in Florida, where Isbell’s fingerprints were recovered on the letter. Police arrested Isbell on Oct. 7 in City Heights, and he appeared in San Diego court, where a judge ordered his extradition to Florida to face federal charges. Prosecutors said agents found four additional unsent letters addressed to Congress at his City Heights home, along with a .357 handgun. They also found another threatening email message he sent to a Louisiana State Representative back in 2021. Isbell’s attorneys argued he did not pose a threat to the public as he has no criminal record or firearms in his household. Isbell did not make a specific threat, his attorneys said, and would not be the one to carry out what was written in the letters sent to Johnson. Times of San Diego reached out to Isbell’s attorneys and did not respond to a request for comment.
