Officials opened an investigation after Johnson’s wife contacted the police, and it was sent to a forensic lab in Florida, where Isbell’s fingerprints were recovered on the letter. Police arrested Isbell on Oct. 7 in City Heights, and he appeared in San Diego court, where a judge ordered his extradition to Florida to face federal charges. Prosecutors said agents found four additional unsent letters addressed to Congress at his City Heights home, along with a .357 handgun. They also found another threatening email message he sent to a Louisiana State Representative back in 2021. Isbell’s attorneys argued he did not pose a threat to the public as he has no criminal record or firearms in his household. Isbell did not make a specific threat, his attorneys said, and would not be the one to carry out what was written in the letters sent to Johnson.
