As early voting expands, voters voice concerns over midterm elections

With a little more than two weeks left until the midterm elections, Chicago and Cook County are expanding early voting options.

On Monday, they opened more than 100 sites area wide. As they do, however, voters are expressing concern about election security and what might actually happen on Election Day.

“I have so many concerns,” said Chanté Olewola, who came to the Early Voting Supersite at State and Adams in Chicago to cast her ballot. “It’s just extremely overwhelming to think about the state of American affairs at this time.”

Rudy Cavello was more direct. “I am kind of nervous they might rig the election,” he said.

With Nov. 3 fast approaching, the people responsible for elections in Chicago and suburban Cook County are trying to ally some of those concerns as they open more early voting locations.

“We’re working with the sheriff’s office as well as local law enforcement to make sure if anything happens that’s unexpected that we will be prepared,” said Marisol Hernandez, chairperson of the Chicago Board of Elections. “If you overprepare, you don’t have to overreact.”

In Chicago, early voting is now available in all 50 wards. Voters can cast their ballots at any early voting location, regardless of where they live in the city. Those locations will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Downtown early voting locations at the Chicago Board of Elections Supersite (137 S. State St.) and Chicago Board of Elections Office (69 W. Washington St., 6th Floor) will also be open during the same hours.

Voters can register to vote or update their registration at any early voting site.

When asked about the possibility of federal interference in the midterm elections, Cook County Clerk Monica Gordon said she has not heard any confirmation that there will be a federal presence at the polls.

“We are prepared,” she said. “If there is any unlawful presence at the locations, we have a chain of command where our election judges are trained to contact the election operations center, and we will contact local law enforcement.”

Election officials are also working to better track mail-in ballots.

Already Chicago reports more than 30,000 have been returned, an increase from 27,000 at the same time during the primary elections earlier this year.

Still, Terri Rodgers says she wanted to cast her ballot in person.

“It was the right thing to do, and I just wanted to get it out of the way,” she said. “The last time I voted, the line was all the way around the corner.”
