Let me guess: you've suddenly got blueberry fever and can't seem to get enough of the sweet-tart purple (yes, purple) berry now that summer is in full swing? Your fridge is brimming with clamshells full of them, ready to be turned into jam or folded into pancakes, and you've already been berry-picking at least twice so far this season. We can't say we blame you. Blueberries are at their peak during the warm summer months, and while you can find them pretty much year-round, there's something about enjoying them at the epitome of ripeness that feels almost transcendent.
Pies taste sweeter, smoothies are more vibrant and even our drab morning oatmeal transforms into a moment worth waking up for. Of course, when it comes to reliability, fresh blueberries can vary drastically in terms of taste, and they're notorious for spoiling before you even get a chance to enjoy them. It's a chance we're willing to take for some of the season's best, but we'll also settle for frozen blueberries if we're in a pinch.

Publix Issues Recall of Greenwise Frozen Blueberries Over E. coli Concerns
FDA
Not only are frozen berries picked and packed when they're at their ripest, but they're typically cheaper in comparison to their fresh counterparts, and you can find them long after berry season is over. Sounds like a win-win to me! But before you race to the freezer aisle to stock up, you might want to think twice before tossing them into your cart. In an earth-shattering blow to berry lovers everywhere, Publix just issued a recall of its popular Greenwise Organic Individually Quick Frozen Blueberries over potential E. coli contamination.
The berries in question were first recalled by the company Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. of San Carlos, Chile, which produces the fruit for Publix. According to a news release from the retailer, the affected product was shipped and sold in eight states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. You can identify the affected blueberries by using the following information:
Product: Frozen GreenWise Organic IQF BlueberriesPackage Size: 10 ouncesLot Code: 60401Best By Date: February 9, 2028Publix is advising customers who may have purchased any frozen GreenWise blueberries on or before July 3, 2026, to return or discard them immediately. So far, no other lot codes or products have been included in the recall. Unfortunately, the news comes amid 12 confirmed cases of gastrointestinal illnesses, with some being reported after consumers ate the potentially contaminated frozen blueberries.
What E. coli Symptoms to Look Out For
As far as E. coli symptoms go, they typically include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting and can appear after three to four days. Luckily for most healthy adults, an E. coli infection doesn't require special treatment and will go away on its own with rest and hydration. With blueberries being such a hot-ticket item this time of year, it might be a good idea to double-check your freezer to be on the safe side. We'll be keeping an eye on this situation as it unfolds, but in the meantime we'll stick to strawberries.
