Drew Barrymore is reflecting on her time on the Never Been Kissed set — specifically during one infamous scene.
During a break of her talk show, an audience member told the actress, "I do your Never Been Kissed dance all the time," and proceeded to do the dance move from the scene where Barrymore, who played Josie Gellar, a journalist posing as a high school student, danced on stage at a nightclub after accidentally eating a marijuana-laced brownie.
"Talk about raw and vulnerable," Barrymore recalled of the scene. "We were filming that scene, it was in front of Jessica Alba and James Franco and Seth Rogen, all these really cool kids, and there I was like, doing that and I felt so uncool."

"We all feel like such a geeky, dweeby, uncool, unsexy dork sometimes and I just wanted to embody that because it doesn't escape anybody's journey," she continued. "The minute you're out to make a specific impression, sometimes it goes the other way."
The film, which she said she "loved getting to do" because "it was so true to the human experience," was released in 1999 and also starred David Arquette and Leelee Sobieski. While Barrymore mentioned Rogen in her story, he did not star in the film.

Previously speaking about the film, Barrymore once explained that it was a high pressure situation because "I knew if it didn’t work, we weren’t going to get another chance. We had so much fun making it, it was the best time ever, but I had a clenched stomach the whole time," she recalled in 2024.
She also shared that the studio heads told her she was looking "too unattractive," to which Barrymore said "Good!" to serve the purpose of the movie.
"And then they were like, 'It's too far'...and they said something that appealed to my sensibilities rather than my ego, they were like, 'We don’t want you to lose the heart because you’re going so far for the comedy.”
