For Maxwell Caulfield, age was just a number, and love was all that mattered, as he opens up about how he viewed his age-gap romance at the start of the '80s with his now-wife and people's misconceptions about the relationship.
At only 20 years old, Caulfield was just starting his acting career after having moved from the U.K. to the U.S. when he was 18 years old. He started in some off-Broadway productions and theater work when he landed a role in the 1980 play The Elephant Man. It was there that he met his future wife, actor Juliet Mills.
The actor fell head over heels and never really thought about his and Mills's age gap, with her having been 38 at the time. In a recent episode of his Still Here Hollywood podcast with Steve Kmetko, Caulfield reveals it was never an issue to begin with.
"It didn't occur to me, and Juliet maintains to this day it didn't really occur to her, either," he explained.
Mills added, "We didn't think about it. We didn't talk about it, either. It was just two people who just communicated on such a high level, in different ways. We had so much in common because we were both English, to start with, we're both actors, and we just had a communication instantly."

By 1980, Mills was already a well-known and established actor who started her career in the 1960s. She became known for her roles in The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Ben Casey, 12 O'Clock High, and her favorite, Avanti! In 1969, she was the star of Nanny and the Professor and won an Emmy in 1974 for QB VII. By the '80s, she decided to return to theater, with The Elephant Man, where she would be Caulfield.
"That wasn't really where it was at. It happened so fast. It caught us both off guard, needless to say," said Caulfield.
The two actors tied the know shorty after meeting in 1980. Mills had been married twice before, having shared a son and a daughter from the previous marriages. Caulfield, at the time, had not yet been married, and the two never had children. To this day, Caulfield boasts about his marriage to Mills after 44 years together.
