Gear Up for 2028? Slow Free Agency, Vučević Retires (Internationally), and Other Bulls Bullets

It’s NBA Summer League week!

Happy Monday, Bulls fans. By the end of this week, we’ll have seen Caleb Wilson, Noa Essengue, and Dailyn Swain suit up in a Bulls uniform for the first time, with Tiago Splitter on the sidelines. There’s a lot to look forward to.

But first, we have a slow news day to get through. There isn’t much happening today, so this one is more about looking ahead to what’s coming.

    Let’s talk Bulls basketball.

Nikola Vucevic © Nell Redmond-Imagn Images NBA free agency has been a bit of a snooze fest. I think we all kind of expected that with all the trades that happened leading up to the day, but the actual free-agent signing period has been pretty quiet lately. As things stand, there are currently 59 unsigned free agents who finished last season on an NBA regular-season roster. Going into the 2026/27 season, there are 413 players under contract, which means there are still 37 open roster spots across the league. We know the Chicago Bulls have one of those open spots. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, LA Clippers, Miami Heat, and New York Knicks are the only teams with three or more roster spots still available. The remaining free-agent class isn’t exactly loaded with talent, so I wouldn’t expect many big contracts or long-term deals from here on out, outside of players like Jalen Duren, Peyton Watson, and LeBron James.

Rich Paul to me on LeBron James' free-agency decision: "I don’t think this happens anytime soon." Should NBA teams be prepared to wait for weeks instead of days? Paul added, “I don’t think it’ll be the next few days." For @Forbes t.co/jyquTl74H1 pic.twitter.com/RBPK9XBrNL

    — Mark Medina (@MarkG_Medina) July 4, 2026 The FIBA World Cup Qualifiers have also been underway if the Summer League isn’t your cup of tea. Most countries have been rolling out rosters filled with some of the best NBA talent they have to offer. Well, almost all of them. In September 2025, former Bulls big man Nikola Vučević announced his retirement from international basketball. Yesterday, the Montenegro national team honored him for everything he gave to the program with a heartfelt and emotional sendoff. To cap off an already memorable day, Montenegro went on to edge Romania by one point, giving the fans in attendance one more reason to celebrate.

    — FIBA Basketball World Cup ? (@FIBAWC) July 5, 2026 Talking about the FIBA World Cup, we also have to talk about the Under-17 World Cup, which just came to an end with Team USA taking home the gold medal. While the champion wasn’t exactly a surprise, it’s the two incredibly talented players who went head-to-head in the final that Bulls fans should really keep an eye on. Everyone talks about the 2027 NBA Draft being weak, but the 2028 NBA Draft could be headlined by Team USA’s Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje and Serbia’s Nikola Kusturica. Boumtje Boumtje was named MVP of the FIBA U-17 World Cup after posting 20 points and 15 rebounds in the championship game while averaging 20 points and 11 rebounds throughout the tournament. Kusturica was just as spectacular, dropping 37 points and nine rebounds in the final while averaging 25 points and seven rebounds for the tournament.

    — nbadraftpoint (@nbadraftpoint) July 5, 2026 Both players will begin their college careers next season, with Boumtje Boumtje heading to Duke and Kusturica to UCLA. They’ll be too young to enter the 2027 NBA Draft, meaning they’ll each get two years of college basketball under their belts before becoming draft eligible. Between their professional experience overseas and what they showed throughout this tournament, they’ll have plenty of time to continue developing against high-level competition.

    — nbadraftpoint (@nbadraftpoint) July 5, 2026 Bulls Executive Vice President Bryson Graham has repeatedly talked about this being a slow rebuild, so could Chicago eventually position itself to chase lottery gold in 2028? It’s impossible to know where teams will end up picking with today’s lottery odds, but landing even one of these two prospects would take the Bulls’ young core from a good one to one of the best in the NBA. Yes, it’s a little bit of recency bias. But after what the entire basketball world just watched these two do, why shouldn’t Bulls fans dream a little?
