Basic Instinct writer delivers reboot film update and confirms new and returning characters

The writer of Basic Instinct has confirmed that his upcoming reboot of the iconic erotic thriller film will see the return of Catherine Tramell – the character memorably played by Sharon Stone in the original.

Joe Eszterhas revealed the news while giving an update on the script during a chat with Interview Magazine, during which he also called the 2006 sequel – with which he was not involved with – "really bad".

He said: "They paid me a million five to have nothing to do with it," adding that "I didn’t think they wanted to take the kind of creative chances the original did," and that "they didn’t want controversy".

Of his upcoming reboot, Eszterhas said that he told the studio he'd only agree to take on the project on one condition.

"I told MGM/UA that if I did this, I’d want it to be fun and enjoyable," he said. "I just finished the script and we’ll see."

And although he said that he was unable to reveal too much about the script, he did confirm that both the aforementioned Catherine Tramell and her her daughter, named Jezebel, would appear.

Meanwhile, he seems to think that the film – just like the original all those years ago – will cause its fair share of discussion when it's eventually released.

"Some people will laugh at some of the dialogue," he said. "Others will be pissed off by it. But even those who are pissed off will secretly enjoy it, even if they don’t publicly. It will be controversial."

Later, he added: "My new script has quite a few moments where the audience will be really startled and ask themselves, 'Holy s**t, did I hear that right?'"

While no director or stars are currently attached to the project, Eszterhas said that original director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Starship Troopers, Benedetta) was unlikely to return this time around but that he "would certainly welcome him back".

Earlier, there had been reports that Saltburn and Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell might take on the project, but this was later denied by her reps.

As for whether there's any chance of Stone herself will reprise the role of Catherine, the star previously revealed that she was not attached to the project, going so far as to tell US TV show Today: "I don't know why you'd do it ... good luck!"

We'll be on the lookout for any further updates on the reboot, and will be sure to report the latest developments as and when they break.
