Amazon MGM Studios gave romance readers a reason to celebrate on June 29, announcing a film adaptation of Ali Hazelwood's bestselling novel "Love, Theoretically." But within hours, the celebration turned into a fight.
The rouble? One name buried in the producer credits,Colleen Hoover.
The "It Ends With Us" author will produce the adaptation through her Heartbones Entertainment, alongside partner Lauren Levine, according to Deadline, which reported that Amazon MGM landed the film rights to Hazelwood's novel with "Along for the Ride" filmmaker Sofia Alvarez directing and adapting the screenplay. Hazelwood will executive produce alongside Alvarez. Despite that pedigree, readers online zeroed in on Hoover.
Fans of Hazelwood's novel flooded social media demanding Amazon cut ties with Hoover, resurfacing old grievances about her work and her family. Critics pointed specifically to a years-old controversy involving Hoover's eldest son, Levi, who was accused by an X user in February 2022 of harassing her while she was a minor (Hoover has denied the allegations). Others focused on her books themselves, arguing that titles like "It Ends With Us" and "Verity" blur the line between romance and abuse in ways they don't want anywhere near a Hazelwood adaptation.
The reaction spread fast across X and TikTok, with posters calling the pairing "cursed" and asking Hazelwood directly why she'd allow it. Some worried the backlash could bleed into the film's reception before a single frame is shot.

Hoover's producing history complicates the picture. Her company already has a deal with Amazon MGM on "Verity," her own psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, due in theaters October 2. Heartbones also produced "Reminders of Him," which made $89 million worldwide against a $25 million budget after opening in theaters in March. Commercially, Hoover's involvement is a vote of confidence. But to a segment of Hazelwood's fandom, it's exactly the opposite.
For her part, Hazelwood is staying close to the project as executive producer, which some fans have taken as reassurance that her voice will guide the adaptation regardless of who else is in the room. Director Sofia Alvarez, whose credits include both "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" films, is writing the screenplay, giving her significant creative control over how faithfully the physicists-turned-fake-daters story translates to screen.
"Love, Theoretically" arrives as Amazon doubles down on romance adaptations. The studio's take on Hazelwood's debut novel, "The Love Hypothesis," starring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, premieres on Prime Video September 23, giving fans an early gauge of how the streamer is handling her work before this second project moves forward. No cast has been announced for "Love, Theoretically," and no release date has been set.
