The Fourth of July is almost here, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with fireworks – just not your own, fire officials said Thursday. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, CalFire and local fire departments are preparing for the weekend’s festivities, urging those celebrating in San Diego County to leave the big shows to the professionals, as the area’s urban wildfire risk is especially high.Because of San Diego’s layout, with canyons weaving through neighborhoods, the whole city is at risk, said Candace Hadley of SDFD.“We are in a year-round fire risk no matter where you live in the city of San Diego – in fact in the county and the state,” Hadley said.Despite its beautiful native vegetation, San Diego is host to flammable dry fuels such as chaparral, which covers canyons, creating a much larger risk of wildfires.Daniel Cayan, climate sciences researcher at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, describes the typical ingredients for fires: heat, dryness and any sort of wind. On the Fourth, fireworks become part of the equation.“There’s certain areas where there’s lots of brush, chaparral, vegetation and so forth that make for vulnerability.” These are called “Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones,” and the city has provided a searchable map that residents can use to determine if their homes could be affected.
According to CalFire, consumer fireworks caused 747 fires in 2025. Most wildfires, in fact, are human-caused.It only takes an instant for fireworks to spark a fire, SDFD Lifeguards Division Chief James Gartland said. “It can happen the moment you light that fuse, or even before you light that fuse, and just hit some brush by mistake,” Gartland said.To mitigate risk, Hadley recommends the concept of “Zone Zero,” in which an area of up to 5 feet surrounding the home is cleared of trash, debris and vegetation to help create a non-combustible space. The year-round wildfire risk is attributed to higher annual temperatures and urbanization. In June, a large fire erupted in Sorrento Valley, charring about 90 acres – flames burned dangerously close to homes. First responders were surprised by how quickly the fire progressed, even with minimal wind.“That means the vegetation is really dry,” Hadley said. The best solution, the officials said? Protect your community and avoid fines by attending legal, professional fireworks shows on the Fourth of July this Saturday.
