I can’t yet get myself hopeful about the division, but I do think it’s worth pointing out that the Cubs are finally back within 5.0 games of the Brewers for the first time since May. Why can’t I let myself get hopeful, though? Mostly because the Cubs have won 14 of their last 18 games and they made up a whopping three games against the Brewers. It’s maddening to such a degree that I mostly just try not to think about it at this point. The Cubs have optioned Jordan Wicks back to Triple-A Iowa after his three-inning appearance on Wednesday, so a new pitcher will be coming up ahead of today’s series opener against the Cardinals. Lefty Antoine Kelly would be the most logical option already on the 40-man, though the Cubs could add someone who isn’t yet on the 40-man, because there are a LOT of guys pitching at Iowa right now in the bullpen. After picking him up off of waivers (and ultimately then outrighting him), the Cubs sent reliever Eduarniel Nunez to Arizona for a few weeks to work on getting back on track. After that work, and a couple great appearances in the complex league, Nunez is back at Iowa:Eduarniel Nunez was a longtime Cubs farmhand who made his MLB debut with the A's and Padres last season and recently returned. He earns a 2.0 inning save in his 2026 @IowaCubs debut by striking out 3 and touching 98 mph with the heater. He threw 22 of 30 pitches for strikes.

Because this was so extreme, and makes the difference in the categorization of four runs, I expect this is the kind of thing that could be discussed in October at awards time.
