Who will claim only their second ever win in the FIFA World Cup knockout stages? We look ahead to Saturday’s clash in Kansas City with our Colombia vs Ghana prediction and preview.
Colombia vs Ghana: The Key Insights
Colombia have won each of their last four World Cup matches against African nations, and are the Opta supercomputer’s favourites to extend that streak against Ghana, winning 68.9% of the pre-match simulations. Ghana have failed to win any of their three games at the FIFA World Cup against South American opposition. Colombia could record three successive World Cup clean sheets for the first time.Colombia and Ghana are both aiming to record only their second ever victory in the World Cup knockout stages when they lock horns in the round of 32 at Kansas City Stadium.
Two former quarter-finalists, they are two more wins away from matching those performances at the very least in North America.
It is 12 years since Colombia lit up the finals in Brazil on their way to reaching the last eight, with Antoine Semenyo to catch fire. The Manchester City winger is yet to register a shot on target at this World Cup, with his three attempts yielding a meagre 0.13 xG. There were concerns when Semenyo went down late on against Croatia with what seemed to be a knock to the ankle, but it did not appear serious and he should be fit for this game.
Regardless, Queiroz may be tempted to promote Abdul Fatawu to the starting XI. Despite playing just 101 minutes across three substitute appearances, no Ghana player has created more chances (two) or completed more dribbles (four) at this tournament than the Leicester City winger.
Colombia vs Ghana Head-to-Head
Kansas City provides the setting for what will be the first ever meeting between the two nations.
Colombia have prevailed from each of their last four World Cup matches against African opposition, including a 1-0 victory over DR Congo in Group K, with all four wins achieved by a single-goal margin.
However, their only previous such match in the knockout stages saw them beaten 2-1 after extra-time in the round of 16 by a Roger Milla-inspired Cameroon in 1990.
By contrast, Ghana have failed to win any of their three matches against South American nations at the finals. All three culminated in defeat: going down 3-0 to Brazil in 2006 and 2-0 to Uruguay in 2022. Their most memorable, though, came on penalties against the latter in their controversial 2010 quarter-final showdown, when Luis Suarez’s hand notoriously took centre stage.
Colombia vs Ghana Prediction
The Opta supercomputer heavily favours a Colombia victory, with Lorenzo’s side having won 68.9% of the 25,000 pre-match simulations.
Ghana’s chances of prevailing are rated at just 11.6%, with a draw after 90 minutes at 19.5%.
On the whole, the World Cup knockout stages are not territory that either side are overly familiar with.
Ghana have won just one of their three such matches, with the exception to their aforementioned defeats against Brazil and Uruguay being a 2-1 victory over USA after extra-time in the 2010 round of 16.
Meanwhile, Colombia have only advanced from one of their four previous World Cup knockout games. The sole win was a 2-0 success against Uruguay in 2014, when James scored that volley as part of a brace. However, Los Cafeteros‘ sole elimination in such matches without extra-time or penalties occurred in the following game of that tournament, as they were narrowly beaten 2-1 by host nation Brazil.
