Elderly and disabled residents stranded outside during heat wave after apartment elevators break on Thursday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Yellow Alert heat wave presented a serious problem for residents at a downtown high-rise apartment building.

All three elevators at Park Square Apartments on Manhattan Square Drive were not working Thursday. That left dozens of elderly and physically disabled residents stuck outside in the sweltering heat.

News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski spoke with residents at the scene. According to management, Conifer Properties LLC, at least one of the three elevators has been repaired. Still, it was out for hours, causing many issues for the people who live there, many of whom are elderly and disabled.

The outage forced some residents to choose between climbing up to 16 stories to get home, wait for hours for the elevator to be repaired, or find somewhere else to sleep.

“I’m going to try and find someplace else to spend the night, just because I can’t make it back up 16 flights. My knee is bad, I’ve had heart surgery. All of this is just too much,” Brent Merritt said.

Merritt, a resident of four years, was one of the residents who wasn’t able to get back up to his apartment for hours due to the downed elevators.

“The day before yesterday, the elevator got up to 15[th floor], and it dropped. It dropped so fast that I was off my feet,” Merritt said.

With the elevators out, some residents had to up several flights of stairs to get to their apartments in 90-degree heat.

“I’m sweating, I’m praying. But I got this, I’m going to get up there, and I won’t come back down tonight,” Yolanda Gavin said.

Makesha Jimmeson lives on the fifth floor.

“This is an awful lot for me to go up and down the stairs, I have back problems and foot problems,” Jimmeson said.

“I have a dog and he has to come out. There’s no elevator. I just slid on the stairs that are so greasy because they never clean them. I have a problem with my arm and my back right now from it,” said Karen Kudor, who lives on the seventh floor.

Merritt told Kowalski he and his neighbors frequently have issues with power outages and plumbing problems, things that can cause serious health risks.

“Depends on the unit. I understand that there’s some units that have electrical issues. There’s some that have plumbing issues. I know that there’s a major roof leak. Those caused a lot of problems in a lot of the units,” Merritt said.

At this time, it’s not clear if just one of the elevators has been repaired or if all three are back in service.

This isn’t the first time News10NBC has investigated a Conifer property recently.

In November of last year, we told you about the trash trouble at the same apartment building – Park Square. Trash rooms on every floor were overflowing with garbage, and outside dumpsters were full to the brim.

Management cleaned that up within a couple days and put up signs telling people to not leave their trash in the hallways.

Just a few months later in a bitterly cold march, the Harris Park Apartments near Blossom Road were without heat for nearly a week.

Rochester’s landlord-tenant bill of rights requires landlords to keep homes heated above 68 degrees during the fall and winter months.
