The Mets sent infielder Zack Short outright to Triple-A, according to his MLB transaction tracker. With Francisco Lindor returning to the team on Wednesday, Short was designated for assignment. He’s cleared waivers and will head to Syracuse, unless he rejects the assignment. Short has been outrighted previously and can elect free agency.
The 31-year-old Short appeared in three games with New York. He went 1-for-8 with five strikeouts in his brief tenure on the roster. The Mets grabbed Short off waivers from the Tigers a couple of weeks ago. He hit .167 in 46 plate appearances with Detroit this year.
It’s been a whirlwind campaign for Short, who’s spent time with four organizations since March. He inked a minor league deal with the Yankees over the winter. The Nationals acquired Short in a cash deal shortly before Opening Day. After about a month in Washington’s minor league system, Short was dealt to the Tigers, again for cash. In six weeks with Detroit, Short was DFAed, elected free agency, re-signed with the team, and then was DFAed again.
Short has spent time with five teams across six big-league seasons. He has a 58 wRC+ in 649 plate appearances at the highest level. Short’s main contributions have come through defensive versatility. He’s been a passable defender at second base, third base, and shortstop. With Lindor back and Ronny Mauricio also healthy, Short might have more luck finding another big-league opportunity with a different organization.
