It has been a fast day of swimming. Marrit Steenbergen broke the women’s 100m freestyle World Record and Gretchen Walsh clocked the fifth-fastest performance in history in the women’s 100m butterfly, while Leon Marchand threw down the fifth-fastest performance of all time in the men’s 400 IM. A bit lost in the mix, though, was Michel Arkhangelskiy breaking the Asian Record in the men’s 50m fly en route to winning the French Elite Championships.

Arkhangelskiy, who represents Bahrain, clocked 22.91 to get the win ahead of a pair of Frenchmen, Nikita Baez (23.26) and Clement Secchi (23.38), taking down his former best of 22.97 from this meet a year ago by six hundredths and clipping Olympic champion Joseph Schooling‘s 22.93 Asian Record from the 2017 World Championships by two hundredths.

Arkhangelskiy’s time ranks him eighth in the world so far this season and puts him in the driver’s seat as the gold medal favorite for the Asian Games in September.

Born in Russia and raised in France as a political refugee from age four, Arkhangelskiy spent years as one of the top junior swimmers in the country without ever being eligible to represent it internationally due to his non-citizen status. He filed for naturalization in May 2023 with hopes of competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but his request was refused on the grounds that he was not employed. An appeal through his lawyers failed to change the outcome, and an attempt to join the Refugee Olympic Team was rejected by the French Olympic Committee, which deemed him too integrated in France to qualify. Despite having hit the Olympic qualifying standard in the 100 back, he was shut out of the Paris Games entirely. It was through his club move to Cercle des Nageurs de Marseille that Bahrain approached him with the opportunity to hold a passport and compete internationally, an offer he accepted last year.

Arkhangelskiy has trained in the United States since August 2024, competing for Florida State, and recently announced his transfer to California for his remaining NCAA eligibility.

During his freshman season with the Seminoles, he scored four individual points at the 2025 NCAA Championships, finishing 14th in the 100 fly (44.77) and 16th in the 100 back (45.05), while also contributing a 19.10 fly leg on Florida State’s seventh-place 200 medley relay.

This past season, Arkhangelskiy finished 40th in the 100 fly (46.41) and 41st in the 100 free (43.33), and contributed a 19.67 fly split on Florida State’s 15th-place 200 medley relay and a 19.01 flying-start split on their 18th-place 200 free relay.

He currently holds FSU program records in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 fly, and 200 back.
