A Chicago man who is a teacher at an Illinois high school was charged by federal prosecutors with transporting child pornography on a flight from Chicago to Mexico, authorities said.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois alleges Thomas Neal, 42, possessed images and videos of child pornography on his cell phone when he flew from O’Hare International Airport to Benito Juárez International Airport in Mexico City on June 17. A criminal complaint revealed Neal was selected for secondary screening by Mexican border authorities, who observed images on his phone that amounted to child pornography.
Following the discovery, Mexican authorities secured Neal’s belongings – his phone and luggage, which included two laptops and six electronic storage devices – and placed him on a flight to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Texas. There, Homeland Security Investigations agents conducted a search of Neal’s items and uncovered several hundreds of files that they said constituted child pornography, according to the complaint.
Federal prosecutors said Neal works as a high school teacher in the Northern District of Illinois, but didn’t provide a location.
Neal was charged with one count of transportation of child pornography, which carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison and a maximum of 20 years. Neal remains in custody pending a detention hearing at 12:30 p.m. on Monday in Chicago.
